I can't add to what's already been said about plot and characters. I would like to quibble a bit. If you're going to write historical fiction, you need to know the history. She's better than some, which is why I'm bothering, but (a) young men from literate, educated home-owning families didn't enlist in the Royal (not British) Navy as able-bodied seamen: they started as midshipmen--the lowest rung of the officer corps' ladder. And (b) When men performed surgery in 1806, they didn't ask any fool questions about how clean the area was. Well past the American Civil War, surgeons never cleaned aprons between patients. An apron covered with dried blood was the mark of a veteran surgeon. These surgeons seem to have studied Pasteur--which would require a time machine. Ms Harrison's editor has failed her on these points. These are not obscure points. They're part of having a background in the period. And when they come up, you're jolted out of the story. I hope the author will take a little time between novels to read the actual history of the era or contemporary books, letters and newspapers--not to make a bad author good, but a good author better.

It's a nice gentle romance, great to while away a few hours. I liked that the hero had a flaw and wan't the totally 'perfect' heroes that you so often read about. I'm not saying too much because I hate spoilers in a review. Amelia was a great heroine. Sensible and kind without being a doormat. And the main thread running through the story was very interesting. Anyone who'd like to read a nice easy romance with an interesting theme will certainly enjoy this.

The subject matter was a bit different than most stories of this time frame. When we read of the war times we often forget the dire consequences suffered by those injured. Especially how lives are changed. Society on many levels was very shallow and self absorbed at this time. Those less fortunate without the funds or pedigrees of the ton had to carry on as best they could. The sad plight of the many young girls not blessed with looks or dowries is vividly shown in this story. It really makes you take a loser look at how others are treated if not up to our personal "standards". The only reason I only gave it three stars is for very modern dialogue and Amelia kept repeating the same thoughts and explanations to the point of distraction. It was extremely annoying to keep reading the same thoughts over and over repeatedly. If not for this I would have given five stars. I especially enjoyed the short history on using dogs to assist the blind.
