When Alizée Benoit, a young American painter working for the Works Progress Administration (WPA), vanishes in New York City in 1940, no one knows what happened to her. Not her Jewish family living in German-occupied France. Not her arts patron and political compatriot, Eleanor Roosevelt. Not her close-knit group of friends and fellow WPA painters, including Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Lee Krasner. And, some seventy years later, not her great-niece, Danielle Abrams, who, while working at Christie’s auction house, uncovers enigmatic paintings hidden behind works by those now famous Abstract Expressionist artists. Do they hold answers to the questions surrounding her missing aunt?    Entwining the lives of both historical and fictional characters, and moving between the past and the present, The Muralist plunges readers into the divisiveness of prewar politics and the largely forgotten plight of European refugees refused entrance to the United States. It captures both the inner workings of New York’s art scene and the beginnings of the vibrant and quintessentially American school of Abstract Expressionism.    As she did in her bestselling novel The Art Forger, B. A. Shapiro tells a gripping story while exploring provocative themes. In Alizée and Danielle she has created two unforgettable women, artists both, who compel us to ask: What happens when luminous talent collides with unstoppable historical forces? Does great art have the power to change the world?

The Muralist: A Novel, by B. A. Shapiro

Review “B. A. Shapiro makes the radical, varied, and sometimes enigmatic world of abstract expressionism altogether human and accessible in her smart new historical thriller. …It has more emotional ballast and is more skillfully written than what one customarily finds. The novel evokes the horror and sorrow of the Holocaust in just their tedious administrative tasks of retracing steps, of sifting through wreckage. Shapiro also does a wonderful job of restoring complexity to the historical moment and stripping away the clarity of retrospection.” —The Boston Globe “Shapiro’s plotting is deft, and the anonymous paintings and Alizée’s disappearance add mystery and intrigue to the tale. Like her well-received 2012 novel, “The Art Forger,” this new story takes us into the heart of what it means to be an artist. …vibrant and suspenseful. As tens of thousands of modern-day asylum-seekers from the Middle East and Africa surge into Europe, and pictures of their mistreatment are broadcast around the world, “The Muralist” is a grim reminder that history continues to repeat itself.” —The Washington Post “B.A. Shapiro captivated us in 2012 with her “addictive” novel The Art Forger. Now, she’s back with another thrilling tale from the art world, set right on the brink of World War II.” —Entertainment Weekly “The Muralist is, like What She Left Behind by Ellen Marie Wiseman or Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline, a historical novel that brings the 20th century to life…” —USA Today “Shapiro follows the enthusiastically received The Art Forger (2012) with an even more polished and resonant tale. [Her] novel of epic moral failings is riveting, gracefully romantic, and sharply revelatory; it is also tragic in its timeliness as the world faces new refugee crises.” —Booklist (starred review)“Shapiro’s writing pulses with energy…. The Muralist brings the time period and setting to life. Readers will appreciate Shapiro’s seamless integration of fact into the story and will feel immersed in a time when the world tipped into chaos. Art, history, and mystery — an intriguing and satisfying blend.” —Washington Independent Review of Books“In The Muralist, novelist B.A. Shapiro deftly layers American art history, the facts of World War II and the fictitious stories of Alizee and Dani. …The Muralist is a compelling mystery. …The Muralist elevates Shapiro to an even higher plane and is sure to be a crowning touch in an already celebrated career.” —BookPage “In this noirish intrigue and fine-art detective story, Shapiro ably intersects the early years of the abstract expressionist movement, the Roosevelts, institutionalized anti-Semitism that denied American visas to Jewish refugees, the relentless run-up to World War II, and the generational losses of the Shoah. Mystery and historical fiction lovers…will find this a riveting read.” —Library Journal (starred review) “Engaging … Shapiro convincingly portrays the work of the artist as an agent of expression and hope in a world of despair.” — The New York Jewish Week“[Shapiro] knows how to craft a page-turner. The Muralist is certainly an engrossing tale. Perhaps it will also send a few readers to the Museum of Modern Art for a fresh look at the craft of Rothko, Pollock, and their contemporaries. That would be a wonderful, and very un-abstract, mingling of art and real life.” —New York Journal of Books

From the Back Cover “B. A. Shapiro weaves a spellbinding mystery . . . With this starry cast (Pollock, Rothko, de Kooning, Krasner, even Eleanor Roosevelt), fans of Shapiro’s earlier art-mystery hit, The Art Forger, will not be disappointed.” —William Landay, author of Defending Jacob   New York, 1940. The country is teetering on the brink of war. A new art movement called Abstract Expressionism is burgeoning. European refugees are seeking asylum from rising fascism. Amid political turmoil, a promising career and a love affair are interrupted when a brilliant young artist vanishes . . . and today, seventy years later, another struggling artist, her great-niece, is piecing together the truth about her disappearance—and about so much more.   “I am a great fan of B. A. Shapiro, especially her new novel The Muralist. It is a tantalizing mystery, as well as an involving meditation on the meaning of art over time.” —Scott Turow, author of Identical   “An expertly constructed, riveting tale of art, politics, love, and consequences in the Depression Era. I admire so much the way she vividly brings to life this passionate world of the past—it rings with originality and authenticity. What a compelling read!”—Jami Attenberg, author of The Middlesteins

Is it an historical mystery, a look at the art world in the late 1930s and WW2 years, an intimate look at two generations who come to terms with the losses in the Holocaust, or all of the above? Shapiro writes in two periods of time and goes back and forth between the two. Some authors can carry it off, but I thought it was confusingly done here. The story of the muralist is the tale of a young French-American artist, Alizee Benoit, involved in the Abstract Impressionism movement in New York. She's gaining recognition as an artist and works and lives with other artists. Her lover is Mark Rothko and her closest friend is Lee Krasner. (B.A. Shapiro combines both real and fictional characters in her book). But Alizee is also trying to get her Jewish relatives from France and Germany. A subplot is the voyage of the refugee ship St Louis which was turned away from docking in Cuba and the United States and the on-going anti-Jewish policies of the Roosevelt administration. But she has a friend in First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, an admirer of her art work. Then Alizee disappears, never to be seen again. The other part of the back and forth is set in 2015. The lead character is Danielle, who is Alizee's great niece. She's works for Christie's auction house and is trying to trace her great aunt from her disappearance during the war. She has a few art clues to help her in her search. The problem with the book is that B.A. Shapiro tries to do too much. There are so many characters and plot points that the reader can get lost. While I appreciated the effort, I wish she had done a bit less.

But "The Muralist" was a huge disappointment. The book started off slow.I kept reading on the theory that it would pick up, but it never did. The characters were basically one dimensional and never fully developed except perhaps for the primary imaginary character Alizee, but that is a gift. Shapiro's interjection of an imaginary artist who supposedly shaped the careers of Mark Rothko ,Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner and the American school of Abstract Expressionist, not to mention being friends with and influencing Eleanor Roosevelt, was totally unbelievable. This book was, unfortunately, just boring, boring, boring.

A poignant exploration of morality, resourcefulness and imagination By Bookreporter The art world --- one of temperamental artists, sharp-eyed critics, sophisticated gallery owners and dusty museum archives --- is a rich setting for a novel. Whether this view of the art world is accurate may be beside the point as it is a culture that is foreign and intriguing to many readers. In her latest book, THE MURALIST, B. A. Shapiro appeals to just those readers in telling a tale of a passionate and brilliant young artist caught in the political maelstrom of the early 1940s in the US and Europe. This perspective is connected to that of another woman in the art world, decades later, trying to solve a mystery that happens to be very personal indeed. It is 1939, and Alizée Benoit, a Jewish American artist of French descent, is working on mural projects for the WPA along with artists like Lee Krasner, Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko. Her life in the art world, surrounded by so many talented painters, is one of hard work, poor living conditions and late night discussions about Abstract Expressionism over drinks. But Alizée, who lived with her beloved family in France for seven years after the deaths of her parents, is filled with sorrow and a sense of loss that she rarely shares with even her closest friends. When she gets word from her family in Arles that the Nazis have begun to make things beyond difficult and dangerous for them and all the Jews across Europe, Alizée begins to work at finding ways to bring them to America.Alizée’s job at the WPA brings her into contact with Eleanor Roosevelt, who soon becomes a fan of her work and an important patron. Her desperation to rescue her family, tempered somewhat by her affair with Rothko, both inspires her to paint in bold new ways and to put herself in dangerous situations to effect change at home and abroad. As her art evolves and her activism increases, her friends grow more and more afraid for her mental health. She eventually agrees to a voluntary commitment at a psychiatric hospital but then is never heard from again.Seventy years later, Alizée's great niece, Danielle Abrams, is working at an auction house and finds some hidden canvases that she believes were painted by her aunt. Having grown up mesmerized by the story of her great-aunt's talent and disappearance, Dani becomes ever more obsessed with finding out what really happened to her in December 1940 and proving that she had a major impact on the work and style of the American Abstract Expressionists. Connecting family legend with art history and examples of paintings and murals, Dani travels from New York to France in search of her aunt and in hopes of establishing her legacy. Confronted at every turn with the devastation of the Holocaust and the realities of the creative life in the US, Dani's journey remains one of hope and family.Shapiro takes great liberties with the lives of American artists like Rothko, Krasner and Jackson in order to tell her story. However, THE MURALIST is evocative of life creatively and fervently lived, if not of accurate details of time and place. It is unfortunate that she succumbs to typecasting Alizée as the unstable artist, though her references for that type are quite clear. The language, especially in the sections that Dani narrates, is very casual, sometimes jarringly so, but the novel flows nicely between the protagonists, highlighting the differences and the similarities found between them and the worlds they inhabit. THE MURALIST is a poignant exploration of morality, resourcefulness and imagination.Reviewed by Sarah Rachel Egelman

One girl who never gave up and will go to her grave loving her soldier. This is a very touching heartwarming read that will not only make you a believer in romance but in miracles. I love the whole Broslin Creek series with this new short but sweet addition is just another wonderful story to add to this series. It is sure to touch your heart and bring a smile to your face. It proves that love never dies even after so many years.Ms. Marton never lets you down when it comes to excitement. love and romance. She gives you a touching read that stays with you. This might be short and sweet but it holds a powerful message of love and lost. A war, years, time or death cannot kill the love between these two characters. I love the fact that the author touched on some of the things that had happen in her other books. She leaves nothing out and no guessing as to what is happening. Just a wonderful touching fun read.

Jesus' prophecy that the very stars of heaven would fall in the last days as the sun is darkened and the moon is turned to blood is fulfilled when a violent meteor storm ravages Earth during the fifty four hours immediately preceding the Rapture. These events are experienced and chronicled by Cable 9 News anchor, Samantha Harper, her cameraman and soon-to-be-husband, Aaron Weisberg, veteran chopper pilot, Gabe Mackenzie, and their wealthy boss, Liam O'Connor. Also central to the story are twin brothers Joel and Ariel Fredenburg, who possess the New Testament Spirit-gifts of prophecy and the word of knowledge, respectively. The Rapture itself takes place in the final pages of the book, setting up the action-packed sequel to come. The scope of the novel is global, and the many subplots include a nuclear Gog and Magog battle in Israel, a violent, meteor-induced tsunami encounter in the Indian Ocean by the U.S.S. Fuller, a Kessler Event-downing of virtually all communications satellites, the complete destruction of Washington D.C., San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Silicon Valley, and an edge-of-your-seat helicopter chase involving the CIA, Secret Service, and the President of the United States. Throughout the book there are scenes which include the shadowy dealings of various demonic spirits. Dirgeneese, Banturn, Werelon, Starlox, Prock, Maldon, and Celinock provide a sort of return to the glory days of Frank Peretti’s, “This Present Darkness” series, but their foul dispositions are considerably nastier. One particularly grisly moment occurs when Satanist Gustav Fontane—called upon by the CIA to help locate the Fredenburg twins—is stricken dead during a Pentecostal prayer meeting after slandering and lying about the Holy Ghost, and is eaten by maggots before even hitting the carpet, mirroring the events of Acts chapters 5 and 12. While fictional, all concepts presented in the text are firmly rooted in sound biblical doctrine and Bible prophecy. More importantly, this work is a call-to-arms for the reader to become completely intimate with the Lord. The fallacy of the errant doctrine of cessationism is strongly addressed, and the validity and reality of the spiritual gifts and baptism of the Holy Spirit are presented and shown to be as much for Christians today as they were for the Jesus’ disciples and believers in the first century.

Asteroid Apocalypse: Countdown to Rapture, by Russ Reimer By coupecheveux I have read quite a few books about the Apocalypse by Christian authors and they were very good with Scriptures too.But I must say this one totally blew me away, read it in 3 days couldn't put it down...very accurate with the Holy Scriptures, I felt my soul rejoicing! and it is instrumental in showing non believers how and when the Asteroid Apocalypse is going to arrive, and it is soon. Also the author showed one how to get saved. Everything accurate according to the book of Revelation of the Bible. I personally cannot wait for the sequel, what are the ones that are left after the Rapture are going to do; how they will survive and hopefully become Christians themselves.Mr. Russ Reimer you definitely allowed the Holy Spirit to guide you. A marvelous job, thank you. I am going to read it again. Sadly my friends just don't care to read a long book, they have no idea what they are missing!

The author does an excellent job of bringing the book of Revelations to life in an easy to understand presentation. You'll quickly come to love the characters, most of whom have great faith and bold determination. The events in this story are very current and you will quickly recognize the character who plays the President. Grrrrr! Readers will thoroughly enjoy the fast pace action and honest dialogue. I loved this book and hope/pray there is more to come. Excellent job!

My name is Ausdylan Elvis Ashford, a twenty-two-year-old who leads a rather perfect life. With a steady job straight out of university, a charismatic best friend I’m in a band with, and a girlfriend I’ve loved since the moment I first gazed upon, I couldn’t ask for more. Until my perfect girlfriend, B, changed both of our lives forever. It began with the words, “I’m pregnant,” and the realisation I’d soon guide a new life into this world. Embarking on my own journey of self-discovery, I found new meaning in love, living, friendship, and family. This should have become the greatest love story of all, but I assure you it isn’t. Sometimes true love and unbreakable trust is built upon lies and deceit. Sometimes those you know better than anyone turn out to be strangers you don’t know at all. My name is Aus, and this is my (un)love story. . . -- --- -- -- -- Hi, my name is Matthew and I'm the author of I Unlove You (and my previous novels, Tick to the Tock & Beyond Parallel). I'm excited to have you here and appreciate the fact you reserve a few minutes for me and my book. I only hope you venture forward, add this novel to your collection, and begin reading soon :) But what is I Unlove You all about, and why would I write a Coming-of-Age novel like this: a Contemporary New Adult Romance that defies almost every rule a good love story should abide by? In fact, you might say This is Not a Love Story at all... Well, I believe we live in an age where people grow up fast but take many years to come-of-age. We live with our parents longer, tread towards love with trepidation, and hop from one job to another. The world's 'real' and gritty, and I happen to believe most love stories follow suit. So although this Coming-of-Age novel is a Contemporay New Adult Romance, it isn't a love story in the traditional sense. If you like fluff and Disney-happy-ever-afters, you may like to turn away now. But if you like your books to be gritty and real, and you consider yourself an avid reader & bookworm, you may just fall in love with I Unlove You. I wrote this Coming-of-Age story because it yearned to break free from me, and I crafted it for those of you (maybe you're one of them) who expects more from the books your read. As such, I don't only invite you to download this book for free, but join me on a wonderful journey of writing and publishing. You'll learn more about this within the actual book, and if you choose to become a member of the Merry Misfits, you'll soon be part of a memorable experience. You see, I Unlove You is a Forever Free Novel (anyone can read it for free. No catch. No restriction) because I wish to share this story far-and-wide, and break down any and all barriers that stop folk like you from reading this story. But like I say, this isn't about a single book. It's about the experience between you and me... between you and all the books I write... between you and your fellow merry misfits who expect more from the novels you read. So... as you read I Unlove You, please remember the story itself only plays a role within the grander experience on offer. There's much more to come from this Coming-of-Age New Adult tale, and if you choose to download your free copy now, you'll soon appreciate what I mean. Which leads me to ask: Will You Download I Unlove You? I hope you will, but I understand if you don't. Whatever you choose, I hope you enjoy your next read... and the one after that... and have a most excellent day. And if you ever wish to say hello, do so. Email me... Tweet me... FB Message me... however you choose to get in touch, I assure you I'll reply. Here's to you and your awesome self. --- -- -- -- -- -- -- ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Matthew Turner is a British writer who tends to focus on Coming-of-Age New Adult Novels. 9 of 10 people found the following review helpful. The Power of Love By darknlovelly I love Jada and Born's love! In this novel Born and Jada make mistakes but unlike part 1 when Born wasn't strong enough to help Jada conquer her demons, he holds on tight to the love of his life and doesn't allow her to deal with any circumstances alone, even when the mistake she made years ago by stealing Jamari' s connect moneys comes back to haunt her. They are terrorized and even when she thinks he probably should have second thoughts about their relationship he doesn't. Born finally puts Sheldon in his place and he makes a 360 degree. His hatred was stemmed off of the fact that he never knew his father and wished Born was his. Zion, Frankie, Baron, and Sunny brothers that were all apart of the same empire comes tumbling down when Frankie becomes unraveled. Anisa refuses to let go of the fact that Born always chooses Jada even though he is partly to blame because of a mistake he made after a drunken night. The ultimate heartbreak is Sunny falling so far from grace. Her relationship with the white lines that has already took so much of her happiness proves to be her demise. Sunny never seemed to shake the feeling of being let down by her family for the love of money. It takes her far too long to blame herself for her own drug problem. I did feel that Dominique and Toya's role in this book was kind of random because they didn't play really a large roll. To me it kind seemed like they were only added to close out their character. I also realized that the author could have did a better job with keeping up with their ages. If you pay close attention to detail you would be able to catch on. This book really reflects how true love has no boundaries and that Bonnie & Clyde are meant to be.

6 of 7 people found the following review helpful. Please read White Lines and Snapped series before reading this! By S.R. Smith I really enjoyed this book to the fullest. I like how Tracey Brown brought closure to Jada and Born as well as other characters from her Snapped novel. If you hadn't read Snapped or Aftermath: A snapped novel, i advise you read those first cause you will be lost in this book. There were lots of sad moments in the book, a couple people die, wont say who. She shows growth in her characters and the story flowed. It was realistic and not over the top. I liked how she did not leave this book open for another sequel, especially since it took her forever to release this book. All and all if you liked the White lines and Snapped book you will be satisfied with this one. It answers a lot of questions and its very suspenseful as well as a tear jerker (if you're a cry baby like me).

True Tracy Brown fans will enjoy the cameos and wrap-ups for some old characters from other books like Snapped and Criminal Minded. Those who feel there are too many characters must not be familiar with these plot lines as I was glad to see Lamin's chocolate self make an appearance. I don't want to spoil anything for anybody but there were times I wanted to FIGHT the author. I LOVED THIS BOOK. Another home run for Tracy Brown who can do no wrong. #flawless

The morning after the festivities of Midsummer's Eve, the villagers of Bampton make a grisly discovery

Master Hugh, Kate, and their children attend the Midsummer’s Eve fire. The next morning Hugh hears the passing bell ring from the Church of St. Beornwald, and moments later is summoned. Tenants collecting the ashes to spread upon their fields have found burned bones.

Master Hugh learns of several men of Bampton and nearby villages who have gone missing recently. Most are soon found, some alive, some dead. Master Hugh eventually learns that the bones are those of a bailiff from a nearby manor. Someone has slain him and placed his body in the fire to destroy evidence of murder.

Bailiffs are not popular men; they dictate labor service, collect rents, and enforce other obligations. Has this bailiff died at the hand of some angry tenant? Hugh soon discovers this is not the case. There is quite another reason for murder . . .

Ashes to Ashes (The Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon), by Mel Starr

Review "A delightful treasure trove of historical detail as we delve into further medieval intrigue with Mel Starr's thoughtful and endearing Hugh de Singleton." -- Penelope Wilcock, author of The Hawk and the Dove series "A thoroughly enthralling and entertaining medieval crime novel, full of suspense, action and delicious historical detail. The medieval surgeon, Hugh de Singleton, is a worthy successor to Ellis Peter's Cadfael and the plot twists are equally as satisfying. I became so captivated by the characters of Hugh and his wife that I couldn't wait to go back and read the whole series from the beginning." -- Karen Maitland, author of Company of Liars

About the Author Mel Starr was born and grew up in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After graduating with a MA in history from Western Michigan University in 1970, he taught history in Michigan public schools for thirty-nine years, thirty-five of those in Portage, MI, where he retired in 2003 as chairman of the social studies department of Portage Northern High School. Mel and his wife, Susan, have two daughters and seven grandchildren.

Another finely crafted 14th Century crime gem By Blue in Washington What I most like about this historic crime series are the meticulous descriptions of everyday life in 14th Century England. It was an often dangerous, violent, uncomfortable, and highly restricted time to live and author Mel Starr pulls no punches in describing the inherent difficulties of life for the whole social hierarchy. In "Ashes to Ashes", the bones of a murdered man that turn up after an annual village festival, prove hard to identify as all locals seem accounted for. Protagonist Hugh de Singleton, bailiff of Bampton, proves up to the task of IDing the victim and teasing out the motive for his murder. While the crime is not that difficult for the reader to figure out early on, the wonderful details in the novel about people's daily activities, social relationships, connections to the early church, food and living conditions keep boredom at bay until the redoubtable bailiff tracks down the perps and hauls them before those responsible for meting out justice. And it should be said, that the availability of real justice depended entirely on one's place in the political/social hierarchy of the period

He has created a heroic figure in Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon. He is sensitive, courageous, and smart with a strict moral code. He is someone who everyone can identify or hope to aspire. He a 14th century Englishman who is constricted by the contemporary medical knowledge of the time and uses scripture sayings in this highly charged religious era to provide a unique perspective to the narrative. The books develop a beautiful love story along with dangerous plots that he is charged to unravel by his logic and resourcefulness. I have become very fond of his developing life story that provides excitement and intrigue along side a blossoming family life.

An Incredible Suspense Filled Mystery By VicG Mel Starr in his new book, “Ashes To Ashes” Book Eight in the Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon series published by Monarch Books returns us to Oxford in 1369 for another mystery involving the intrepid bailiff and surgeon. From the back cover: The morning after the festivities of Midsummer’s Eve, the villagers of Bampton make a grisly discoveryMaster Hugh, Kate, and their children attend the Midsummer’s Eve fire. The next morning Hugh hears the passing bell ring from the Church of St. Beornwald, and moments later is summoned. Most are soon found, some alive, some dead. Master Hugh eventually learns that the bones are those of a bailiff from a nearby manor. Someone has slain him and placed his body in the fire to destroy evidence of murder.Bailiffs are not popular men; they dictate labor service, collect rents, and enforce other obligations. Has this bailiff died at the hand of some angry tenant? Hugh soon discovers this is not the case. There is quite another reason for murder . . .Mel Starr has created one of the most interesting detectives ever in Master Hugh. Master Hugh and his wife, Kate, take their family to the Midsummer’s Eve, St. John’s Day fire- A celebration of summer. Then, the next morning as the people are spreading the ashes in the fields bones are found, which is where we get the title Ashes To Ashes. Now Hugh finds out that the deceased was a bailiff, not highly loved, but still deserving of justice and Hugh will go through the possible suspects with all their motives to figure out which one of them did it. “Ashes To Ashes” is a very exciting book that will keep you engrossed in the characters as well as life in England in the 1300’s. I have become a huge fan of Mel Starr and am fantastically pleased with his creation: Hugh de Singleton. These mysteries that he gets involved with are highly complicated and thoroughly enjoyable. I think Mel Starr is an extremely talented writer who really knows how to tell a story that will grab you and keep you flipping pages until you find out who did it. I am already looking forward to the next book, “Lucifer’s Harvest”.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Monarch Books. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
