The morning after the festivities of Midsummer's Eve, the villagers of Bampton make a grisly discovery

Master Hugh, Kate, and their children attend the Midsummer’s Eve fire. The next morning Hugh hears the passing bell ring from the Church of St. Beornwald, and moments later is summoned. Tenants collecting the ashes to spread upon their fields have found burned bones.

Master Hugh learns of several men of Bampton and nearby villages who have gone missing recently. Most are soon found, some alive, some dead. Master Hugh eventually learns that the bones are those of a bailiff from a nearby manor. Someone has slain him and placed his body in the fire to destroy evidence of murder.

Bailiffs are not popular men; they dictate labor service, collect rents, and enforce other obligations. Has this bailiff died at the hand of some angry tenant? Hugh soon discovers this is not the case. There is quite another reason for murder . . .

Ashes to Ashes (The Chronicles of Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon), by Mel Starr

Review "A delightful treasure trove of historical detail as we delve into further medieval intrigue with Mel Starr's thoughtful and endearing Hugh de Singleton." -- Penelope Wilcock, author of The Hawk and the Dove series "A thoroughly enthralling and entertaining medieval crime novel, full of suspense, action and delicious historical detail. The medieval surgeon, Hugh de Singleton, is a worthy successor to Ellis Peter's Cadfael and the plot twists are equally as satisfying. I became so captivated by the characters of Hugh and his wife that I couldn't wait to go back and read the whole series from the beginning." -- Karen Maitland, author of Company of Liars

Another finely crafted 14th Century crime gem By Blue in Washington What I most like about this historic crime series are the meticulous descriptions of everyday life in 14th Century England. It was an often dangerous, violent, uncomfortable, and highly restricted time to live and author Mel Starr pulls no punches in describing the inherent difficulties of life for the whole social hierarchy. In "Ashes to Ashes", the bones of a murdered man that turn up after an annual village festival, prove hard to identify as all locals seem accounted for. Protagonist Hugh de Singleton, bailiff of Bampton, proves up to the task of IDing the victim and teasing out the motive for his murder. While the crime is not that difficult for the reader to figure out early on, the wonderful details in the novel about people's daily activities, social relationships, connections to the early church, food and living conditions keep boredom at bay until the redoubtable bailiff tracks down the perps and hauls them before those responsible for meting out justice. And it should be said, that the availability of real justice depended entirely on one's place in the political/social hierarchy of the period

He has created a heroic figure in Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon. He is sensitive, courageous, and smart with a strict moral code. He is someone who everyone can identify or hope to aspire. He a 14th century Englishman who is constricted by the contemporary medical knowledge of the time and uses scripture sayings in this highly charged religious era to provide a unique perspective to the narrative. The books develop a beautiful love story along with dangerous plots that he is charged to unravel by his logic and resourcefulness. I have become very fond of his developing life story that provides excitement and intrigue along side a blossoming family life.

An Incredible Suspense Filled Mystery By VicG Mel Starr in his new book, “Ashes To Ashes” Book Eight in the Hugh de Singleton, Surgeon series published by Monarch Books returns us to Oxford in 1369 for another mystery involving the intrepid bailiff and surgeon. From the back cover: The morning after the festivities of Midsummer’s Eve, the villagers of Bampton make a grisly discoveryMaster Hugh, Kate, and their children attend the Midsummer’s Eve fire. Has this bailiff died at the hand of some angry tenant? Hugh soon discovers this is not the case. There is quite another reason for murder . . .Mel Starr has created one of the most interesting detectives ever in Master Hugh. Master Hugh and his wife, Kate, take their family to the Midsummer’s Eve, St. John’s Day fire- A celebration of summer. Then, the next morning as the people are spreading the ashes in the fields bones are found, which is where we get the title Ashes To Ashes. Now Hugh finds out that the deceased was a bailiff, not highly loved, but still deserving of justice and Hugh will go through the possible suspects with all their motives to figure out which one of them did it. “Ashes To Ashes” is a very exciting book that will keep you engrossed in the characters as well as life in England in the 1300’s. I have become a huge fan of Mel Starr and am fantastically pleased with his creation: Hugh de Singleton. These mysteries that he gets involved with are highly complicated and thoroughly enjoyable. I think Mel Starr is an extremely talented writer who really knows how to tell a story that will grab you and keep you flipping pages until you find out who did it. I am already looking forward to the next book, “Lucifer’s Harvest”.Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from Monarch Books. I was not required to write a positive review.
