By Gillone Washington The third book of the "Storm" trio has me excited and nervous to see how the secret love affair between the two characters Matthew Storm and Michaela , a new intern working on Senator Storm team with political aspirations of her own has secretly been seeing each other and the political repercussions if found out might have negative effect that can derail all of Senators Storm aspirations .What Matthew Storm has found is that he simply can't get Michaela off his mind and out of his head,he has to have her no matter what and the worst part is that others on the team in which she works is starting to suspect that something may be going on between the two of them.In order to squelch the thoughts that is racing throughout the team of coworkers Matthew decided to humiliate Michaela in front of everyone and therefore has Michaela running for the hills ,by throwing in the towel and quitting, before she even gets the chance to learn the political ropes in Washington.Knowing that he can't be without Michaela ,Matthew knows he has some fixing to do to win Michaela back, he may have to learn how to balance his desire with heart when it comes to having Michaela as his lover and employee.I am hoping that Mrs.Brooks is not finished with Matthew and Michaela's love story. I would love see if anything will come from their unorthodox affair,I am rooting for true happy ending for them both.Received ARC from Sarah Brooks

Kayla takes the advice of two new friends about dressing more stylish, doing her hair and makeup. She knows she looks great and it boosts her confidence.Matthew calls her out on it in front of the whole office. How he wants them dressed conservatively. Kayla walks out and another intern, Steven, follows her and tries to help calm her. She feels humiliated, thinking she should quit and go work for another senator. The office door opens and Matthew walks out. Kayla takes off down the hall to go home. When she gets to her car there's a black SUV parked next to it. Matthew sent a driver to get her and bring her to his home. His instructions were to not leave without her. She tells him there is no way that's gonna happen and tells him to go. He follows her to her apartment and stands outside. She could care less until it starts pouring rain and lightening. She goes with him and tells him she'll only need a minute and he can take her back home.Of course, it will take more than a minute to deal with Matthew and he waves the driver off once she's inside.I don't want to give the last part away, so I won't. This third installment of this series is the best so far. I just wish they were a little bit longer.

Getting exciting By Nikki Brackett I received this as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.Again I'm not one to get into politics at all and I'm very quiet lipped on my personal opinions but this story has me captured and interested in politics. I like how Matthew has put his trust in Kayla.. I am not usually one to like being talked to where it feels like someone is belittling me nor do I like reading about it but the way Matthew did that so no one would be suspicious was smart. They want to be together and help each other but have to be very careful doing it. I am glad they are on the same page and working forward together for both their future careers. They are gonna be good for each other both personally and professionally.Excited to read book #4

Pride and Prejudice is a novel of manners by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character, Elizabeth Bennet, as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of the British Regency. Elizabeth is the second of five daughters of a country gentleman living near the fictional town of Meryton in Hertfordshire, near London. Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr and Mrs Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy, have moved into their neighbourhood. While Bingley takes an immediate liking to the eldest Bennet daughter, Jane, Darcy has difficulty adapting to local society and repeatedly clashes with the second-eldest Bennet daughter, Elizabeth. Pride and Prejudice retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of "most loved books." It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature, selling over 20 million copies, and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen's memorable characters or themes.

Amazon.com Review In a remote Hertfordshire village, far off the good coach roads of George III's England, Mr. and Mrs. Bennet -- a country squire of no great means and his scatterbrained wife -- must marry off their five vivacious daughters. At the heart of this all-consuming enterprise are the headstrong second daughter Elizabeth and her aristocratic suitor Fitzwilliam Darcy, two lovers in whom pride and prejudice must be overcome before love can bring the novel to its magnificent conclusion.

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying By Laurel Ann Just when I thought I had more editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE than I should ever own up to, I will freely admit to just one more. After all, what Janeite could resist this tempting package? An unabridged first edition text; Annotations by an Austen scholar; Color illustrations; Over-sized coffee table format; Extensive introduction; And, supplemental material - all pulled together in a beautifully designed interior and stunning cover. *swoon* Where are my aromatic vinegars? This new annotated edition appeals to modern readers on many levels beyond being a pretty package of a beloved classic. Austen is renowned for her witty dialogue and finely drawn characters, but not for her elaborate physical descriptions or historical context. When PRIDE AND PREJUDICE was originally published in 1813, this brevity was accessible to her contemporary readers who assumed the inferences, but after close to two hundred years words have changed their meaning, insinuations and subtle asides have become fuzzy, and cultural differences from Regency to twenty-first century are worlds apart. Anyone can read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and follow the narrative, but it is so much more enjoyable if you can read it on an expanded level understanding it in social, cultural and historical context. Editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has not only added extensive notes on plot, characters, events, history, culture and critical analysis from a vast array of Austen and literary scholars, but added her own personal insights and observations from years of reading Austen and her experience as a college professor. From shoe roses to Fordyces Sermons to military floggings to the 19th-century meaning of condescension, readers will be informed and enlightened on every aspect related to the novel, the author and her times. In a nut shell, she has vetted great resources, gathered nuggets of knowledge and placed them at our feet.As with all of Austen's characters, this new annotated edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has its own charms, "frailties, foibles and follies." Weighing in at over three pounds, and encompassing 464 pages of unabridged text and fine print margin notes, this book easily reigns as the most all-inclusive and well-researched edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece that I have ever encountered. Considering that the elaborate annotation classifies it as a reference work in addition to a full text, it is quite puzzling that it lacks an index. In addition, the illustrations are expertly selected but sadly lost some of their refinement in the printing process, coming across dark and murky in places. However, I was pleased to see a list of further reading and illustration credits listed in the back of the book to encourage readers to "add something more substantial, in the improvement of [their] minds by extensive reading."Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION is a monumental achievement that should be on the top of your holiday wish list and considered one of few editions available to be esteemed truly accomplished.Laurel Ann, Austenprose

Taylor Jane Austen is one of the great masters of the English language, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is her great masterpiece, a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. And such is particularly the case of the Bennetts, a family of daughters whose father's estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennett's death they will lose home, land, income, everything. But are the Bennett daughters up to playing a winning hand in this high-stakes matrimonial game without forfeiting their own personal integrity? This battle of the sexes is largely seen through the eyes of second daughter Elizabeth, who possesses a razor-sharp wit and rich sense of humor--and who finds herself hindered by her own addlepated mother, her sister Jane's hopeless love for the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and her sister Lydia's penchant for scandal... not to mention the high-born, formidable, and outrageously proud Mr. Darcy, who seems determined to trump her every card. But the game of love proves more surprising than either Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy can imagine, and sometimes a seemingly weak hand proves a winning one when all cards are on the table.PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is simply one of the funniest novels ever written, peopled with memorable characters brought vividly to life as they both succeed and fail at the game of life according to the manners of their era. It is a novel to which I return again and again, enjoying Austen's brillant talent. I have little respect for people who describe it as dull, slow, out of date, for as long as men and women live and fall in love it will never be out of style, always be meaningful, and always be funny. A masterpiece of wit and style; a timeless novel for the ages.

Another reader complained about the tiny and almost unreadable font - you probably bought the version published by General Books LLC - and here's the reason.General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Publishing, (google them and take a look at the Wikipedia article on them) and they specialise in publishing books that are free of copyright without doing any editing or quality control. A few quotes from the publishers website will explain more:"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies..... "So what you're getting if you buy the version published by General Books LLC is a scanned in, unedited, low quality (and with an almost unreadable font from the sounds of it) unindexed / No table of contents book at a higher price than many of the good quality imprints available. Basically, VDM Publishing is flooding Amazon with these low quality prints (450,000 of them are listed now) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is insufficient for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher.Totally unethical marketing.A reader,Scott Hannigan has commented: "What you have given us is feedback - not a review. There is an appropriate forum for your complaints. You should delete it as it brings down the average score of a classic." In response, I have to say that Amazon does not provide a forum for complaints and has been remarkably resistant to taking on board criticism from many customers over the books published by General Books LLC. In addition, Amazon is the Printer of these POD books and makes a substantial cut from them. Sadly, given that the General Books LLC version is lumped in with other imprints from genuine publishers, there is no real way of making potential buyers aware of the problems with this particular version of the book without inflicting it on all the other versions available. C'est la vie.Scott - apologies for replying like this but Amazon removed my ability to comment some time ago - I broke ze commenting guidelines. Re "Amazon does provide a feedback section. You will find it under 'My Account', 'Personalization', 'Leave Seller Feedback'" - yes, they do indeed but the response to myself and many others has been uniformly that it's not their problem. Look up the discussion forum on Alphascript Books for a very enlightening backgrounder on this one. That said, if you bought a book from General Books LLC and saw what it was like, you'd be highly annoyed - as most buyers have been - and even if you returned it to Amazon for a refund, you'd be out of pocket for the postage.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. another great entry befitting this gritty Western series By atomskeater Lucas Wade and his friend Nellie have rolled into a new town. Of course there are problems to be had, this time with the local hired guns who have started to turn to lawlessness. Lucas takes on the task of getting things back into order, and like a true bad@$$ he goes it alone. Luckily Nellie is there for the times he does not help.So far the Lucas Wade series has struck me as a well-written return to classic Western literature. The sequel ramps it up a bit, and there's even more action and I daresay the story moves at a swifter pace. Lucas serves as the perfect protagonist, doing things his own way and managing to restore some law to the town. He doesn't mince words, so he earns himself some enemies and rivals. Although he acts like a lone wolf, he does have a noticeable soft spot for Nellie. It was nice to see their relationship continue to grow, and provided a little break from the action here and there. Nellie is encouraged to try to making something more of herself, even despite the racism and sexism she encounters, and she in turn tries to help Lucas out when she can.Gunfighters Justice is a well written western novel that packs in adventure, dusty besieged towns, and rough-and-tumble saloons. A nice escape and a great read.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. guns for hire... a growing town... no respect for the law... a great Western story! By Julie Blaskie The continuing adventure of Lucas Wade is even more enjoyable than its predecessor! Wade accepts a new assignment to help a town when hired guns start to get out of hand - and he brings Nellie Washington with him as well! The previous marshall was killed by the unruly, so Wade is very aware of the situation at hand... It is a big job for a good man...Raylan McCrae has written a wonderful old school Western story with characters you love and cheer for... and others you hope they get what they deserve! Lucas Wade is a quiet hero who sees himself as just a regular man trying to do the right thing and set things right. He respects women and feels their honor must be preserved at all costs. He is a man's man; yet, he shows restraint in his relationship with young Nellie. He tries to encourage to strive for more than what is usual for young girls of her background. She's a tough young lady who had faced a lot in her short life, and she wants to be even more for Wade. In this story, we see Nellie strive to do more and try to take on more responsibility as she sees the mess that Wade has walked into. I was happy to see Nellie step forward and do what was necessary... when the time was right. This book takes us back to a time where there was lawlessness in some areas of the old West. It's a time where honor, respect, honesty, courage, and determination are the norms - and desired traits. It's a time where the lines between what is good and what isn't were much clearer than today. It's a simpler yet rougher time. People faced situations where they ended up doing things they had never thought they would do. This story gives you the feel that you were there back then...We have saloons and gunfighters... banks and businessmen... inns and restaraunts... a jail and a church... a store and stables... There are people trying to go about their business, and there are those who like to make trouble just for the sake of the attention it brings. This is the backdrop where some gunfighters learn the hard way what justice is... that they will not be allowed to prey on the weak!I love Westerns for the reasons mentioned above, and I love Raylan McCrae's stories because he has created a story in the tradition of the great old Westerns! His style helps you get lost in the story... It's a great escape! I had been waiting for this story to see what would happen next to Wade...Now? I'm hoping there will be yet another continuation in this saga in the near future! I was given a free copy of thos book in exchange for an honest review.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Whereas there are quite a lot of things that I disliked about this book By Amazon Customer GUNFIGHTER’S JUSTICE is the second book in the Lucas Wade Series. A gun for hire that is hired by the council members of Springfield Illinois to act as Marshal to bring order back to their town. Whereas there are quite a lot of things that I disliked about this book. I will touch upon the few things I liked about it. Even though there are parts that feel like there should be more. The main character is written just enough that you know who he is, but it is the supporting and side characters that are more personable. The story flow fits with the actions going on at the time and picking up when it is needed. The writing style seems to jump around without letting you known that the scene has shifted and there are parts of the story that read like filler, making it confusing and hard to follow on what is going on at the time. There is some minor editing errors but they do not hinder the reader. And now for the cover, it fits, it tells me upon looking at it that it is Western genre, and thus I expect the story to be set within the wild west time period. As for what I did not like about this book, as I said there was quite a lot, I will only touch up on bits and pieces. This book is about Wade Lucas, the main character, the hero of the story and the most underwritten character of the book. He is suppose to be this brilliant gunman but he acts like he is missing a few screws. He is hired as the Marshal and instead of locating the Jail House right away he takes his female companion out to dinner to the wonderful little diner called the BLS. Even when he brings in the two bank robbers he went to retrieve, he forgets he has them. He only remembers when his horse kicks at one of their horses. Back to the dinner, every other business in this town has nice names but the diner is not given that privilege. The menu just does not fit within the time period and location of the town, it is like the diner has electricity and that would not be available. The only time that any of the food fits within the time period is when the owner of the diner makes breakfast. I could continue on about everything I did not like about this book, but I will refrain from talking about the rest of my dislikes. In truth if I had read the first book this one may of made more sense. However, it is a good book and readers, teenage and up, would be more preferable readers due to some of the content with more disturbing subject matter.

Prince Allen has trained his entire life to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious mother, who has made their kingdom one of the wealthiest and most influential in the empire. For the past few years he has trained to become the new consort of the High King. The only thing no one prepared him for was the stubborn, arrogant High King himself, who declares Allen useless and throws him out of court. High King Sarrica is ruling an empire at war, and that war will grow exponentially worse if his carefully laid plans do not come to fruition. He's overwhelmed and needs help, as much as he hates to admit it, but it must be someone like his late consort: a soldier, someone who understands war, who is not unfamiliar with or afraid of the harsher elements of rule. What he doesn't need is the delicate, pretty little politician foisted on him right as everything goes wrong. Publisher note: this is a highly expanded, completely re-written version of the free short that was previously available under the same title.

The short story had conflict with the king not wanting an administrator for a husband and the translator having suffered abuse at the hands of his brothers. While the translator was upset and affected by his past abuse, he did not let it define him and went on a quest to be useful and to prove his own worth, the king came to his rescue and both admitted their attraction and they lived happily ever after. Now the new book. Pros nice world, plenty of back story and additional characters. One of the things Derr does best is world building. Cons additional characters, too many to keep track of, they became distracting. Allen was a wimp, who alternated between bitchy and feeling sorry for himself through most of the book. The king was just an ass until he suddenly decided that he wanted to have sex with Allen. Manufactured drama of the high school kind! While the author usually writes a happily ever after story with some drama/angst this story was too pat and I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the short story. I also agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the real purpose of this book was to open a new world for the following sequels.

Another great fantasy from Megan Derr By BookCat The Harken Empire consists of a complex combination of languages and classes, and has been at war in some way or another for far too long. The current High King is the perfect example of this. He’s an ex-soldier whose deceased husband was also a soldier. As often happens with Monarchs, since it’s been years since his husband died, he’s being pushed into marrying again. Enter prince Allen, a silver tongue (translator) who knows more than ten different languages fluently and has been training for the past two years for the position of High Consort, and who is nothing like the soldier partner High King Sarrica wants. Allen and Sarrica are both stubborn and determined, and despite Sarrica snubbing him at their first meeting, Allen is determined to do what he was trained for.For those of you who may not know, the first version of “the High King’s Golden Tongue” was a short free read written for the Goodreads MM Group’s 2012 Don’t Read in the Closet event, and although I did enjoy the first edition, I felt that there was a lot missing. The new edition doesn’t just fill those holes, it creates a whole new landscape. For one, ‘alternative sexualities’ (such as the LGBTQ rainbow) are taken as being as normal as hetero leanings, and transgender people are accepted as being the gender they feel rather than what they are born as. For example, Sarrica’s first husband was male yet carried their children, and one of Allen’s siblings is asexual (obviously that’s not the term used, though). I must admit, I loved that acceptance, as it is how I feel it should be always. In top of that, the Harken Empire is made up of many different languages with many dialects and the confusions such things cause, yet gender is not taken into account when it comes to careers, lifestyle, or status.I don’t know if I could say I had a best bit, per se, but I did love the fact that all of the main characters had their own strengths and weaknesses, the teasing between friends and family, and the way each character was affected by their past in different ways. To be honest, I couldn’t put it down, and my sister gave up trying to talk to me until I finished the book because I either didn’t hear her or had to ask her to repeat what she’d said. (I’ve actually trained myself to mostly not do that anymore, since it’s dangerous to be oblivious to what’s happening around you for hours on end.)I would recommend the second edition of “The High King’s Golden Tongue” for anyone who enjoys reading stories with action, drama, fantasy, wit, or people who persevere despite the odds.I will admit that I am a fan of Ms Derr’s but even so, I would put this story among the best she has written in the fantasy genre.

14 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Emontionless and Boring By Paraphernalia This novel had potential, but none of it was fulfilled. The characters never develop, the storyline is bland and un-engaging, and there is no romance or relationship development. The world is never explained or detailed enough to make me interested. The most engaging scenes are skipped over entirely to detail the discussion and planning that comes after. The writing is bland and flat and barely fits with the medieval style fantasy world, sometimes using too modern language. The only redeeming qualities are the characters are unique and the sentence structure and grammar are decent.

I use to scroll pass this series and then one day, I was like heck why not.......... Im so glad I did!!!! This has been one of thee best series I have read it. From beginning to end is a true page turner. It shows you can do whatever as long as work hard, also shows how selfish relatives can be until they need you. This series shows that unconditional love is still around but you only get what you put in. No matter your age as long as you have a purpose anything can be done. Once again hate to see this end because there will never be another Farren but Im sure she will create another character that I will love. Keep doing your thang! Can't wait for your next release

In this raw, moving short novel for readers of Jill Shalvis, Molly O’Keefe, and Karina Halle, two kindred spirits share a winning lottery ticket—and discover what it really means to get lucky.   Holly Ward is stretched to the breaking point, raising her young son alone and working long hours for minimum wage at a local superstore. Sure, she’s noticed the new guy with the easy grin and warm brown eyes, but she’s learned the hard way that relationships aren’t worth the pain. Still, when he invites her to split a lottery ticket, she figures a little innocent fun couldn’t hurt. The last thing she expects is to score big, which is exactly what happens . . . in more ways than one.   From the moment he meets Holly, Ray Lopez is drawn to her quiet dignity and openhearted beauty. And when they hit the jackpot together, he’s thrilled that the single mom can give her kid a better life. The only problem is the chaos surrounding them: lawyers and reporters swarming, friends and family angling to get their cut. In all the chaos, Ray discovers an oasis of calm and passion in Holly. But with the stakes higher than ever, winning her trust could cost him everything.Praise for Rolling in the Deep   “Intense . . . [a] charming story . . . For as fast as this book reads, there is a very well-developed cast of supporting characters who help to bring both Holly and Ray to life. . . . Their connection to each other jumps off the page.”—Library Journal   “Vivid and realistic.”—Dear Author   “[An] inspiring romance . . . If you are looking for . . . a book with a lot of heart and feeling, you’ve got to read Rolling in the Deep.”—Obsessive Book Nerd   Includes a special message from the editor, as well as an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

For those of us not in the millionaire's club, it's normal to think about what we would do if we won.Ray and Holly are co-workers at Corman's, a one-stop superstore. Ray convinces Holly to give him a dollar to which he will add another dollar and buy a Powerball ticket. If they win anything, they will split it evenly. Holly doesn't put too much stock into it until she sits down to watch the lottery announcement because she promised Ray she would. All the numbers matched. She immediately runs to the bathroom and throws up. Instantaneously becoming a multi-millionaire was apparently too much to handle.Going in to the story, everything feels more relaxed, but after they win, they struggle with not deserving the money and trying to overcome their pasts. As someone who really got into the whole New Adult theme, I thought I would enjoy this book more than I did. In the beginning the characters were more themselves, even if they were living paycheck to paycheck. It seems as if they lost that realness after the win, even before they received the money.I couldn't understand why Holly was still allowing her ex to control her life after being divorced for five years. It would have been different if she was actually still in love with him, but she's not and she left him because of his actions. It just didn't seem very realistic for a mother to allow her son to be taken without a fight. That whole situation just irked me.It doesn't take long to read this story, so if you think it's something that you would like, and you always have to find out for yourself, then go ahead and give it a shot.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Emotional and full of heart By Sheri @ Tangled Up In Books Originally posted on my blog: Tangled Up In BooksI received a copy of this book, from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review. In no way did this sway either my review or my rating! This book was extremely hard to get through, strictly on an emotional basis and nothing to do with writing quality at all. You know how sometimes you come across those books that will restore your faith in humanity and lift you up, all that kind of stuff? Yeah this did none of those things for me throughout huge chunks of it. I kept having to stop and start, over and over. I desperately wanted to see how it would all come to an end, but at the same time every few pages I was either angry or hurting or a really messed up combination of the two.My feelings towards Holly's character are very, very mixed. As a mother, she's pretty freaking great. She would and has sacrificed anything for her son. On that front I have copious amounts of respect for her. However, due to the verbal abuse of her ex-husband she is an extremely weak person to the most annoying extent. Don't get me wrong, I realize that this, in a way, is not her fault. Her ex is a real piece of work let me tell you. But the fact that she allows it to go on and even years after their divorce lets herself be a doormat for him drove me insane. Every time it was in her point of view she would internally question her own worth, her worth as a mother and so on and so forth. I had plenty of moments when her whiny, self-depreciating inner monologue was almost too much. But what really and truly made me lose faith in mankind was less the main characters and more the brief side characters. First you have Holly's ex-husband, Brett, who is bad enough as it is. He would constantly degrade her which is bad in itself, but what made it a million times worse is the fact that he would do it while standing right next to their son who is around 10 years old I think. So he's obviously old enough to understand what's going on. I was seeing red so freaking much. Holly would bring Drew to his house to drop him off for his week with the kid and as they got out the car Brett would look her up and down with total disgust and say things like "You really just don't even try do you?" or anything else he can find to pick at her about with Drew right freaking there. Bless Holly though for the fact that she never responds, instead she'll just bend down and hug her little boy and tell him how much she loved him. Ugh. It's been days and I still feel all the rage just thinking about that jerk.Or the heartless, piece of crap reporter who did something so incredibly unthinkable that was the worst invasion of privacy I could ever imagine to Ray. I won't give it away, but I really have no words for how sick and gutted it made me feel. Mostly because I could actually see this happening in the real world and it hurt my heart.People suck.Everybody always dreams about how amazing life could be if you hit it big, won the lottery. You imagine spending the money in your mind and how different it could make your life. Heck, I did it myself while I was reading. Went through all the what ifs.I loved that this book didn't paint it all with champagne and roses. You see a darker side. You see the pain, the fear and the worry. The doubts that settle in. You see these characters struggle with trust and how to go on and move to the next phase when everything they've known their whole lives changes in the blink of an eye. Rebecca Rogers Maher did such an amazing job of pulling you into that negative side of something that most would think of as a blessing and really tugging at your emotions and give you that feeling of "be careful what you wish for."Even though Rolling in the Deep was hard to read due to the huge toll on the emotions it was such a good and engaging story. I adored Ray and his genuinely good and giving spirit. I loved the romance between Ray and Holly. I adored little Drew and what a great kid he was despite the kind of man his father was and displayed to him constantly. It was just a really good, dark and intriguing story and I will definitely be reading more from Rebecca Rogers Hughes in the future!Big thanks to Loveswept for the opportunity to read and review this book!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Quick, enjoyable read By Jeanne Bufkin I received this copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.*****MIGHT CONTAIN A FEW MILD SPOILERS!!!!*****This is the first book that I've read by Maher, and while I thought some of it was a bit predictable, it was ultimately a very quick and great read!Holly is a single mother who tries to do everything she can for her son, but is constantly stretched too thin. She has a wretched ex-husband who can't stand that she finally left his verbally abusive butt and will do anything he can to maintain some modicum of control over her. The sad part is that she's been beaten down by him for so long that she still lets him and it adds to her own feelings of being inadequate.Ray is trying to get over the recent loss of his mother and working to keep a promise he made to her before she died to do something more with his life than work in a diner. He falls hard for Holly as soon as he meets her, but he knows he needs to tread lightly to gain her trust. Then, they will the lottery. BIG time. And their worlds are turned upside down overnight. While reading, I thought they'd get straight into the "lovey" section of the story right after the win, but I was pleasantly surprised that Maher chose to slowly build up the tension and not have Holly drop her guard immediately.I really liked their story and I felt the author did a great job in building not only their characters out fully, but also the secondary characters. The story and characters had some depth and I enjoyed the ride. This is a solid 4 stars for me and I'll be checking out other stories by Maher in the near future!

Dodge City – once a notorious cattle boomtown whose inhabitants included Wyatt Earp, Bat Masterson and Clint Adams – now lives in the shadow of its heyday. The Gunsmith returns to his old haunt after being summoned by a lawyer. To his utter surprise, Clint is told he has been left a large inheritance from an old love. But what would Clint do with a saloon, an apothecary, a hardware store and a ranch? By Cap'n Bookfiend This one WOULD rate five stars, but there were elements that did not make sense (surrounding Client's inheritance and the attention it would draw). Otherwise, this is a great, action packed story. The battles are good, as well as Clint's ability to stay one step ahead of the baddies.P.S. For anyone wondering, many Gunsmith's end with Clint basically saying "okay, we've got the small frys and the evidence we need, now lets get the big dog". This is similar to some old school serials, which could be the author's intent.

Six years ago in Vienna, terrorists took over a hundred hostages, and the rescue attempt went terribly wrong. The CIA's Vienna station gathered intel during those tense hours, assimilating facts from the ground and from an agent on the inside. So when it all went wrong, the question had to be asked: Had their agent been compromised, and how?

Two of the CIA's case officers in Vienna, Henry Pelham and Celia Harrison, were lovers at the time, and on the night of the hostage crisis Celia decided she'd had enough. She left the agency, married and had children, and now lives in idyllic Carmel-by-the-Sea. Henry is still a case officer in Vienna, and has traveled to California to see her one more time, to relive the past, maybe, or to put it behind him once and for all. But neither of them can forget that long-ago question: Had their agent been compromised? If so, how? Each also wonders what role tonight's dinner companion might have played in the way the tragedy unfolded six years ago.

All the Old Knives is New York Times bestseller Olen Steinhauer's most intimate, most cerebral, and most shocking novel to date.

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of the Month for March 2015: All the Old Knives has a disarmingly quiet start, but good spy novels are like good spies: they draw you in, earn your trust, and then grab hold with both hands. In Vienna during the mid-2000s Henry and Celia were intelligence agents and lovers who witnessed a terrorist hijacking as it took a shocking turn. Five years later, the two meet over dinner at a restaurant in Carmel-by-the-Sea where Celia now lives as a civilian, to recall the events of the past. As the remembrances overlap with the present moment, tension mounts and questions of who did what to whom, and why, become increasingly urgent. By the last 100 pages Steinhauer’s hook is firmly embedded and it’s hard not to race to the finish. And the ending? I can sum it up in one word--brilliant. – Seira Wilson

Review

“[A] sneaky little gem . . . Sustains the difficult balancing act of melding a heart-racing espionage plot with credible dinner table conversation . . . Mr. Steinhauer specializes in tough showdowns. And the more innocently they begin, the more devastatingly they end.” ―The New York Times Book Review

“A splendid tour de force . . . Without neglecting the turmoil of the geopolitical landscape, the novel focuses more intensely on the equally treacherous landscapes of the human heart.” ―The Washington Post

“[A] masterfully plotted and suspenseful stand-alone.” ―Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

Having now finished his newest book, All The Old Knives, my overall feeling is that it is a satisfying, entertaining read but not one I'd recommend you rush out to read. This is because while there was nothing I disliked about it, there was also nothing about it that made me feel that it stands out from other books in the spy novel genre. As a matter of fact, although the two principal characters in All The Old Knives are or were spies, there is nothing about this book that I found to be be particularly thrilling, suspenseful or exciting.Without going into detail about its plot, All The Old Knives is set completely in a restaurant in a Carmel, California in which two ex-lovers meet for dinner. One, Celia, was once a CIA spy and now a wife with a family. The other is Henry, who still works in the world of espionage in Vienna. As they relive their memories (often through flashbacks) of a disastrous terrorist hijacking that took place six years ago, the motive behind their meeting remains obscured -- is it to rekindle their lost romance or to reignite a conspiracy. On the plus side of this plot setting, it enables Steinhauer to once again demonstrate his strong ability to create top-notch fully developed, complex characters who come across as very "real" (albeit not very likable) people. Also, typical of a Steinhauer book, this plot setting allows the author to provide the reader with a very descriptive sense of place, making me feel that I was right there at the dinner table with the Celia and Henry. On the "not so plus" (let's call it "neutral") side , however, the plot setting is also why I ultimately felt that while All The Old Knives is a satisfying book, it had nothing special about it for me to recommend it highly to you. This is because everything in All The Old Knives is revealed through the conversation between the two ex-lovers/spies.There are virtually no actions, thrills or surprises that the reader gets to experience first-hand, and even the twist at the end comes about very passively.I hope this review is helpful in deciding if All The Old Knives is a book you'll want to read.

Disparity Of The Past and Present By prisrob Olen Steinhauer, the author, has been compared to the spymaster novelist John LeCarre, and this novel serves that comparison well. This is the best Spy novel I have read in years. My genre is spy novels/police procedurals/mysteries and in forty years I have read most of them. Olen Steinhauer has aced the match. In the forward, we are told by Steinhauer that while watching the 2010, BBC's, Masterpiece TV show 'The Song of Lunch', the germ for this book emerged. The Song of Lunch written by Christopher Reid, is a narrative poem, telling the story of a publishing editor who has lunch with an old flame in a Soho restaurant. It stars Alan Reichman and Emma Thompson, and I can see those two cast in this novel. This novel would make a superb film.Henry Pelham a CIA Field officer, now stationed behind a European desk has come to Carmel, California, to meet his old flame, Celia Harrison. They were lovers, working as CIA operatives in Vienna, and after a most horrific incident in Vienna, she left him high and dry. Celia was the love of Henry's life, and he could not forget her. Someone from Langley has reopened that forgotten Vienna case, and Henry is here to question Celia about her memories of this case. The story is told in alternating chapters, one by Henry and then Celia. Henry gives most of the behind the scenes work as Celia talks about Vienna. We learn about the people they worked with, and where they are now, five years post Vienna. This is a mesmerizing portrait of two ex-lovers, now come together at cross purposes at times. They lay their lives out for us in small increments. All of this takes place in a restaurant in Carmel, with Henry and Celia and one other patron, the only guests. This is riveting stuff, folks. Every twist and turn reveals a little more, but we are not privy to the entire story until all at once everything comes together. Looking back after the final page, I could uncover the clues more fully as they were laid out. This is the best of a spy novel, to keep us on tenterhooks at all times, and the writing is simply superb. The disparity of the past and present has come home to roost.Highly Recommended. prisrob 12-16-14

It is a simpler story than the plots found in many spy novels. The central idea is the traditional fare of spy novels -- a mole in the CIA has given information to the enemy and the reader is challenged to discover the mole's identity -- but the focus of this relatively short novel is on just two characters engaged in an intricate dance, probing each other over a quiet dinner. Having cut away the complexity of plot that often attends such stories, Olen Steinhauer is free to focus on the complexity of two primary characters, each of whom is haunted by the past.Information received from a Gitmo prisoner in 2012 suggests that a traitor within the American embassy assisted a terrorist attack at the Vienna airport six years earlier. The improbable accusation sends Henry Pelham scurrying off to interview people who might have relevant information, including Celia Favreau, a former lover who left the CIA and is now married with children. Pelham meets her in Carmel, "a perfect place to live if you want to be someone other than you once were." Pelham is prepared to end her life, if necessary. This sounds like a plot that's been done before but Steinhauer makes it seem fresh. The theme of betrayal is common to books about espionage but the best ones use betrayal to teach a lesson. The lesson here is that betrayal, whether by individuals or governments, will almost always come back around to bite you in the backside. Steinhauer illustrates that lesson in a story that is tight, tense, and convincing. All the Old Knives doesn't have the breadth of the best spy fiction and the ending is a bit weak, but it is nevertheless a worthy read. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.

Anger, rage, jealousy all at once grabbed my attention. Emotion followed along. At times you may want to read something again b/c you wanted to read again how someone did something, what somone did, or who they did something w/. Of all the characters, I loved hating Jeremiah. The more I read, the more he made my skin crawl. He had true definition. I look forward to the next one in the series.

The novel is really enticing and the main character with all her adventures and life twists, Judith is so adorable, her feminine energy and strong determination is priceless. To solve the mystery of father’s death and save her love Daniel from the prison is not the matter of one day. The story is getting more and more exciting with new events on the way. I absolutely enjoyed the storyline and loved the way the author revealed different parts of the mystery slowly. Not boring at all, even some tension is in the air. Great job, I will follow this series for sure!
