330 pages (print edition), 101,706 words, Appalachian romance novel, Mountain family life, Contemporary women’s literary fiction, Appalachian cultural heritage On assignment for a New York women’s magazine to interview a famous Blue Ridge Mountain country musician, Victoria Brown not only stumbles on the source of her reoccurring bad dreams, but also runs smack dab into her heretofore nonexistent family. From a flashback in Chapter 6: … One night of lovemaking and Breck had become my entire world, my reason for existing. How did I ever get to be eighteen years old without him in my life? He held me extra tight as I stood at the door, kissed me extra hard as though he had to get enough to last the day. I hesitated wanting more but he opened the door and pushed me out. … From Chapter 1: … Mother’s death still seemed unreal to me. I had no warning, no closure. Mother was there, a reliable backup support in my life one day, and gone the next. I did all the necessary paperwork and boxed up what few things she had in her tiny apartment. … … I was now a full-grown woman with my life falling into place just the way I wanted. So why did I keep having dreams about him? He had only been a brief moment in time – a very short time. He’d hardly entered my life before he was out of it. So, why didn’t those stupid dreams stop? The harder I tried to stop them, the more they crept up on me. I suppose my upcoming marriage had something to do with those reoccurring dreams. … From Chapter 7 … I sucked in a breath and tightened my grip on a tree limb I was leaning against to keep myself from taking off at a run. Never in my life did I think I would hear a voice sounding like his except in my nightmares. Calm down, I told myself. Your nerves are on edge and you’re hearing things. His voice sounds familiar, that’s all. A lot of people sound like each other. Hadn’t I heard men speak with that same deep voice, that same soothing tone? I couldn’t count the times I’d whirled around to face the owner of that deep voice only to discover I had never set eyes on the man before. This would be another one of those times. The doctor would turn toward me and it would be someone I’d never seen before. … From Chapter 13 … The drive was narrow with a canopy of trees overhead making shadows on the road. Suddenly the trees ended and green grass appeared. An old two-story house set nestled against a bank. There was a front porch with three windows above it making a large dormer. I could almost hear the voices of people who once lived there - the laughter, the tears, and children playing in the yard. I could even hear the low of cattle that once lived near the barn. There were still a few chickens running around, and a mixed breed dog on the porch that had gone gray with age and stiff with arthritis. “Gives you vision of a life once lived, doesn’t it?” So, he was feeling it too. “It’s sad,” I told him. “The good things that come and go.” “The past usually is a bitter-sweet memory.” “I’ll wait here for you,” I told him. “No, Vickie. Come on inside with me. Two old women live here. It brightens their day to have company. … … “Cornbread baking and chicken frying always smells good,” she said as she turned to face us. Her eyes grew huge. Her face went pale as she sucked in a gulp of air. The spoon in her hand hit the floor. I grabbed hold of the doctor with both hands as my back hit the wall. Instinctively, the doctor grabbed me in his arms as my legs turned to rubber. There was no air left in the room and the walls were twirling. “Vickie, what’s wrong? Surely you’re not fainting,” he said. “My Lord in heaven,” escaped Carrie’s lips. “No! It can’t be. It’s impossible. Not after all this time.” “What’s impossible?” the doctor asked as my fingers bit into his arms for dear life. …

I've read several of this authors books and liked a few very much but this was just not an engaging story at all. No chemistry with the Dr and Victoria. He seemed more like a stern principal than a love interest. You don't have to go into a lot of erotic detail which I know most of her readers don't care for, but still feel their passion and attraction for each other. The story of her relationship with her mom was just strange and overall this just felt like a "hurry up and get this book done and this is good enough" situation to me. I know she can do much better than this and that's the reason I was so disappointed.

Ledford From her first description of the scent that haunts her dreams to the delicate words that define both the mountains and the moods of her many and varied characters, the author's precision and depth make the reader intimately aware of images and emotions while giving the plot consistently surprising twists. "Scent of a Man...." is Stern's most expansive and satisfying work to date.

It held my interest so much, I started it last night, read for a half hour, and finished it this morning... To me this is Ms Stern,s best book yet. of course I've said the same thing about some of her other books also---I truly love to read her Books!!!

Deep Freeze (West Coast Series), by Lisa Jackson

From Publishers Weekly When beautiful Jenna Hughes moves with her two children to a small Oregon town in bestseller Jackson's well-crafted romantic thriller, the retired movie star expects to start a quiet new life, but a psychotic fan's deadly obsession soon throws the tranquil community into chaos. One by one, women are kidnapped by a serial killer who hopes to mold them into the likeness of his favorite actress, and Jenna knows that it's only a matter of time before she's the next victim. Jackson (The Morning After) weaves together various subplots, including Jenna's relationship with her rebellious teenage daughter and the inevitable love interest with the rugged local cop, to create a fast-paced and surprisingly complex story. Unfortunately, the focus on the villain's absolute evil rather than on his humanity doesn't allow him to be as disturbing as he could be, but most of the other smalltown characters are more believable. The depiction of the protagonist, a woman who desperately wants her life to be as normal as possible, reaches an unusual depth, and the crisp, skillful language infuses every sentence with suspense. Despite some predictable moments and over-the-top torture scenes, this chilling novel about the high price of fame will keep readers riveted. After being harrassed by a fan in Hollywood, and the death of her sister Jill, on the set of her last movie, she leaves Hollywood and and her ex-husband to find peace and a settled life for her and her family.Shane Carter is the local sheriff, he thinks Jenna is a hot-house flower trading on her fame. Even though he may not like her personally he can't help but notice her beauty. When threatening notes start to appear and women who look like Jenna start to disappear as well as one Jane Doe found dead, he has to get to know the lady. He immediately finds out Jenna is for real. A woman who loves her kids and just wants to find peace. Both have secrets they want to forget, and both find that attraction can not always be locked behind closed doors. As more women disappear and the fear rises, so do emotions. The temperature is falling but in hearts and minds the terror rises. It keeps you on your toes and guessing. Very well written I was totally surprised at the end. Very good book.

By Kristi Ahlers This was a very chilling read by one of today's hottest suspense authors. She has not only penned a fine read that will grab the reader from the get go, she also manages to lay the ground work for the sequel as well. This story takes place in rural Oregon where ex-Hollywood actress Jenna Hughes is trying to live a normal life with her two teenage daughters. Both girls are upset about being uprooted from friends and their father to live in the wilds of Oregon. Jenna is doing her best but life seems to be working against her. Feeling that something bad is about to happen Jenna starts receiving frightening notes at her home, and props that she has donated to the local theater have turned up missing. She thinks that this is just another case of a fan being a little to obsessed with her. She thinks she can handle it. She thinks wrong. At the same time, temperatures are dropping and bodies are turning up dead on the mountain. They are being found with a strange substance on them, and when Sheriff Shane Carter starts really investigating it he is unaware in the beginning that his murders are connected to Jenna's mail. Soon he finds the connection but will he be able to catch the killer before he kills Jenna or her daughters? And more importantly is this someone that he has always known? This was a strong and chilling suspense read. There are plenty of possible suspects and plenty of red herring thrown out to keep the reader on the edge of their seat until the killer is unveiled. This killer is without a doubt one of the scarcest characters I've read in awhile. The romance storyline is very mild so readers of the romance genre may be a little disappointed. Still Shane and Jenna were compelling characters and their attraction and interaction was an important part of this story. Groundwork has been laid for her next novel in this two part series. I highly recommend Ms. Jackson if you like edge of your seat reading with amazing characters that will keep you up late into the night reading.Official Reviewer for [...]

18 of 20 people found the following review helpful. Average By JJC This is my first Jackson book and it felt just average to me. Nothing to recommend it. The characters were written well. The characters had depth but something was missing. The side romance between Shane and Jenna seemed forced and lacking in chemistry and romance. Heres the scoop on the book:Shane is the sheriff of this Oregon town where dead woman are showing up where other woman of there close town are going missing.Jenna is a ex-hollywood actress who has come to this small town to raise her two girls away from the limelight. Jenna is sexy, beautiful, great bod and every mans fantasy. We know this because the author describes her in every format this way. Her daughters Cassie and Allie were the least likeable characters in the book. Spoiled, whinning, rude girls!Jenna starts recieving phone calls, problems with her home, her private things going missing and so on. So she inlists the help of the town sheriff - Shane. The first time they met they did not hit if off. (He gave her a ticket for a broken taillight) Just because he was in a bad mood and she is a ex-hollywood actress. But anyways through this story there are supposed to be atttracted to each other, I did not feel that way while reading this. I felt the author through this on the side and it was sorely lacking in romance. Then there is the suspense. Where was it? I was waiting and waiting to find out who did it and why and then was let down. Oh in the end you know the name of the guy who has been doing the kinllings but not why. Nothing about him about his reasons, no insight whatsoever. Disappointing. He's obsessed with Jenna Hughes but why her? Well you never figure that out. Then there is the flashback to Shane's life in the past that he cannot get over. His friend Davids death and his wife Carolyn. There was no real understanding there to why the author wrote that in the story. It felt thrown in but never understading why. His friend David died while climbing and he has never forgiven himself? And Jennas sister getting killed on the set of a movie. It was mentioned over and over but no details. Don't mention something over and over without explaining. Then when Jenna finds photos of Caroyln in Shanes pocket after they had sex, he never explains and she never asks him to, she says she does'nt want to know. What woman would'nt want to know? Then they have a little argument and then the end Boom! Thats it, yes there was a epilogue but I felt things not being wrapped up very well.

By Justin Continuing where Nightblade left off, World’s Edge follows Ryuu and Moriko as they continue on their paths learning the depths of the sense, each other, and the true centers of power in their world... This story was even better than the first. More action, more happening, and the whole world coming alive in ways that Nightblade scarcely alluded to.Like other readers have noted the story moves along at a faster clip in this book and you’ll be hard pressed not to finish it in one sitting. I’m looking forward to seeing where the journey ends next year and what other new stories Mr. Kirk may have in store for us.

Salvatore in his early work. - a worthy read By Jesse Mathewson Breathtaking, the second of three amazing books, without a doubt an amazing pinnacle. No spoilers from me, however, we may have a new Salvatore here. Mr. Kirk is without a doubt accomplished in both writing and the difficult ability that surrounds bringing characters to life and immersing the reader in the very essence of the characters lives.Well done sir. Well done indeed

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Easily holds its own against anything else out there in the fantasy genre right now. By Donald T. “Worlds Edge” is the second book in Ryan Kirk’s “Nightblade” series – which I believe is a planned trilogy. Kirk’s first book was an impressive debut and this follow up is every bit as good as the first. Both books will easily hold their own against anything else out there in the fantasy genre right now. In this second episode, Ryuu and Moriko are attacked by a strange new type of warrior and they must embark on separate journeys to try and get answers. While this is happening, the three kingdoms stand on the brink of a civil war and a new massive army from outside of the kingdoms march toward them all.Kirk continues to load up his story with new characters that are terribly interesting in their own right, all while further endearing Ryuu and Moriko to the reader. While this fantasy series might not be as epic in its scope as Sanderson’s “Stormlight Archive” or Weeks “Lightbringer” series, it is compelling in its own way. Perhaps it’s the beautifully simple magic system, or maybe it’s the impossible situations that the two main characters find themselves facing that makes them so relatable. Whatever it is, these first two books are captivating and very hard to put down. I’m excited to read the final book when it comes out and will certainly be purchasing whatever else Kirk releases in the future. This series is extremely good. Buy with confidence.

Cassie - Gathering Leaves review blogI have read all of the books in this series and they never fail to intrigue. If you love stories about the fae these are a must read... Kira - The Book Lover's RealmI can't say enough about this series. If you like urban fantasy then stop right now. You can't get better than this. - Sherri S.

From the Author Q&A with S.A. ArcherQ: Who is Donovan?Archer: The former Unseelie assassin finds himself as the only person standing between the young, inexperience Sidhe youths and the predators intent on hunting them. Right from the beginning, he's forced to reinvent himself from a loner to a leader, but that is only the beginning of his transformation. He's a dark and powerful character that has inspired a lot of reader excitement.Q: Who is Lugh?Archer: Lugh is loosely based on the heroic Celtic myth of the Sidhe sun god. As the Champion of the Sidhe, he feels a personal responsibility for the fey, which is what makes it so devastating when he is unable to prevent the destruction of the fey realm. He goes from the golden champion to losing everything that ever mattered to him. He travels from heroism and sacrifice, through the darkest realms of magic and his own psyche, in an epic and unexpected adventure.Q: Who is London Eyer?Archer: London is a human who becomes ensnared into the magic of the fey. Celtic mythology talks about humans who became 'elf struck', which we used as a basis for the Sidhe Touch. Once enchanted there is no cure, but London is a fighter who isn't about to take 'enslavement' as an answer. She's an incredibly strong character, and gives us a human perspective on the fey and their struggles.Q: Who is Malcolm?Archer: Malcolm has always been a reader favorite, all the way through the series. He literally goes through hell, fighting for survival every step of the way. The dynamics between Malcolm and Donovan is epic, building the foundation for the fierce loyalty Malcolm has for the Unseelie leader. Because of his 'bloodhound' nature, and his complicated relationship with magic, he's both incredibly vulnerable and intensely dangerous.Q: So why Ireland?Archer: Ireland is a beautiful and magical country full of the Celtic history and mythology that The Sidhe series draws from. There is an incredible variety of locations that worked excellently for our adventures; from castle ruins, to rough mountains where one can imagine encountering dragons and goblins, to cities both quaint and gritty. Every bend in the road brings you something different, which made it such an adventure when Ravynheart and I visited. It's hard to imagine an Urban Fantasy about the fey taking place anywhere else.Q: Why Urban Fantasy Adventure?Archer: I am a huge fan of the genre myself. Urban Fantasy Adventure readers want to find magic and excitement existing just beyond this 'ordinary' world that we live in. We want to discover that the bakery is run by Brownies, that there is a vampire night club across the street, and that there might be a werewolf living next door. Maybe that shadow wasn't cast by a bird in the sky, but a dragon. And maybe, just maybe, we'll get Touched with the magic of the Sidhe and be invited into that enchanted and breath-taking world, where we can find ourselves on epic adventures and racing to survive. What could be more fun than that?Q: Readers say the series just keeps getting better and better. What makes this series so compelling?Archer: A big part of that equation belongs with the characters that demand to tell their stories. They are multidimensional, with emotional depth which gives the writing an intensity all the way through. Another part is the fresh storytelling. The plot rises organically from the characters, and their choices, which doesn't follow any by-the-numbers plots that many readers are familiar with. There are twists and turns you won't see coming, but that make perfect sense in their circumstances, and this leaves readers anxious to flip to the next page to find out what happens, which is why many readers that discover this series devour every book as fast as they can read them.

ArcherFrom the very start this book got my attention and I finished it a lot faster than I expected to. The storyline is gripping in detail and the plot lines pull you in, wondering where it will go next. I cannot wait to read the next installment to see where it leads!Review of Remnants of Magic, by S.A. ArcherAgain, I was not disappointed when I read this story! Picked up where Scattered Magic left off and kept me wanting more. The suspense is riveting and cannot wait to find out how the tale(s) end!Review of Into Magic, by S.A. ArcherWell worth the wait to get to the next installment of this series! Twists and turns that keep you reading to find out just how the author is going to continue the storyline. Definitely worth the wait! Sorry, no spoilers here!Review of Bastion of Magic, by S.A. ArcherThe last in a great series! All the build-up has led to a realm shattering conclusion, that was completely unexpected. I started reading the series and finished book 1 in a few hours. It just grabs you and you hang on for the ride. The plot is easy to follow and it is truly a good read. This series is one of the best out there. It does not repeat the same thing over and over like with other series. When you start a new book it is fresh and clean; picks up where it should but doesn't repeat everything for chapters on end. And unlike other series the plot is to the end...not the same plot repeated over and over with different characters. That is why I stop reading series; after a while it is the same story, same people trying not to get killed, same monsters, same same same. It is refreshing to read a story that each book continues the story without repetitive fights, phrases and all the bad parts of a series.Way to go Archer and Ravynheart!!! Keep them coming. So excited to read the new series!!!!

"Guirgis, like other storytellers who explore the sacred and profane, is most interested in how grace transforms us."—The New Yorker

Written with humor, tenderness, grit, and wonderment by acclaimed playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis, Between Riverside and Crazy is an extraordinary new play: a dark comedy about a man trying to maintain control as the world unravels around him.

City Hall is demanding more than his signature, the Landlord wants him out, the liquor store is closed, and the Church won't leave him alone. As ex-cop and recent widower Walter "Pops" Washington struggles to hold on to one of the last great rent-stabilized apartments on Riverside Drive, he must also contend with old wounds, new houseguests, and a final ultimatum. It seems the old days are dead and gone — after a lifetime living between Riverside and Crazy.

Stephen Adly Guirgis' other plays include The Motherfucker with the Hat, Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train, Our Lady of 121st Street, In Arabia We'd All Be Kings, The Last Days of Judas Iscariot, The Little Flower of East Orange, Den of Thieves, Race Religion Politics, and Dominica: The Fat Ugly Ho. His play Between Riverside and Crazy won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 2015. He is a former co-artistic director of LABryinth Theater Company. He received the Yale Wyndham-Campbell Prize, a PEN/Laura Pels Award, a Whiting Award and a fellowship from TCG in 2004.

Between Riverside and Crazy (TCG Edition), by Stephen Adly Guirgis

Review “Blurring lines between the sacred and profane has always been a specialty of Mr. Guirgis... Riverside creeps up on you. And every time you think you’ve figured out where it’s going, Mr. Guirgis alters its course, forcing you to readjust your emotional bearings and your take on its characters. I’d locate it somewhere south of cozy and north of dangerous, west of sitcom and due east of tragedy.” –Ben Brantley, New York Times“Guirgis has playwriting nerves of steel. For one thing, he chooses the right kind of worlds to write about: parallel to, but in many ways hidden from, our own, strange enough to fascinate yet recognizable enough to hit home. Language, too: the dialogue is always emotionally specific and accurate to the character, even as it makes the most profane and hilarious leaps... Completely compelling.” – Jesse Green, New York“Scenes switch from tender to gritty to shocking... Guirgis specializes in stories of working-class heroes and zeroes — and everyone in between.” – Joe Dziemianowicz, NY Daily News“A wonderful, generous, altogether unpredictable urban tragicomedy.” – Linda Winer, Newsday“Guirgis, like other storytellers who explore the sacred and the profane, is most interested in how grace transforms us. His empathetic, poetic tales of ex-cons, addicts, and other men whom society would label losers return us, again and again, to a world that Guirgis, by virtue of his particular religion—the church of the streets—illuminates with the bright and crooked light of his faith.” – Hilton Als, New Yorker“A gem! Quite possibly the author’s most accomplished piece to date. Over the past decade or so, playwright Stephen Adly Guirgis has become the foremost interpreter of NYC’s Upper West Side — actually, make that Upper, Upper West Side.” – Entertainment Weekly

All five plays were directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman and were originally produced by LAByrinth. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. his son's girlfriend and his son's best friend all of whom call him pops By muddyboy1 A worthy Pulitzer Prize winning play about a retired police officer (on disability from bullets he took in a shootout). Living with him are his son, his son's girlfriend and his son's best friend all of whom call him pops. Pops has a long term suit against the city because he feels like he has been shorted on his disability payments. Throw in two police officers who are romantically linked and a church lady with some unusual ideas about how to raise pop's morale. Mix this all together and you have a wonderful topsy turvy play.

The Pulitzer Prize committee used great judgment when it chose this play. I can't wait to read the reviews when Steppenwolf produces it this spring!

1 of 2 people found the following review helpful. deserved winner of the 2015 Pulitzer Prize By Frank L. Greenagel Jr. This won the 2015 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Mr. Guirguis has been in the field for about 20 years, and he's written a number of outstanding plays including "Our Lady of 121st Street" and "The Last Days of Judas Iscariot" (my favorite by him). Mr. Guirgius's plays are usually set in NYC and involve a number of down-on-their-luck characters. Some struggle with substance abuse and scattered dedication to 12-step programs; many have been wounded in romance and most are looking for a better life (though they don't see how redemption can happen). This story is centered around Walter "Pops" Washington, a black NY police officer who was forced to retire early after a white rookie cop shot him 6 times by accident. He lives in a rent controlled house on Riverside Drive with his son, his son's girlfriend and his son's recently paroled friend. It has echoes of August Wilson and Arthur Miller in regards to the role of work in shaping identity and how our work & relationships impact our offspring.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Exciting By Robin Perryman Action and drama always does it for me and it was all in this story. I like that I never would have guessed whodunit. I also hated that it ended but I loved the ending. This was so good. There were a lot of twists to this story. I definitely have to read the next part to see what happens next. I hope it's out now because I'm all into the story and hate waiting.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good read By Kindle Customer When I first started to read this book I'm thinking there is no murda mamas named Zuri or Nubia. I would like to know what happened to Zuri after leaving the hospital before showing up in the strip club. Also she fled to Miami but no background on that. Hopefully there is a part 2. I would love to know what happens to Zuri, Brown, and Trav
