By foxtrotoscar This is a mediocre mystery, fleshed out with interminable harangues against the Catholic Church in general, and the Jesuits in particular. The action scenes are so-so, and should definitely be pepped up. I felt there were too many throwbacks to the old days when two of the main characters were lovers, and other events that took place at that time. There were quite a few threads in the plot that went unexplained at the end, as well as the disposition of some of the major characters. The plot is too loose to afford the reader much enjoyment, making this book difficult to connect with its audience

All problems of the world including terrorism was directly caused by Americans. It would seem that morphed into the views of the speaker at that time and it was toned down somewhat after that. But were it not for the fact I feel compelled to finish any book I start, I would have dumped it with in the first few pages. It seemed to get better as I went on. The book seemed to have a definite bias against the Catholic church and I will say I am not Catholic and don't share most of their views and I found the bias very noticeable. The book may well be offensive to Catholics. The book also slammed the Jesuits and managed to work in the other usual boogeymen such as the Masons (and I'm not a mason either). But all that said it's an interesting story, some of the usual conspiracy covering up a secret that could shake up the foundations of Christianity. And this may be offensive to many Christians. The editing is good, the language is generally not bad and there's not too much graphic sex and violence.

This is a stand alone book.Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? No. This is professionally edited.What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Adult English, but with a qualifier: I found only a single f-bomb in the entirety of this book. Of course, there are more sh- and da-words, but inserting just the one f-bomb might be one too many for some readers. Of course, the subject matter, plus the somewhat explicit scenes of sex, would likely alienate many of the same readers who abhor foul language.My biggest pleasure or disappointment was? So far as disappointment, I I have only one serious objection. That is that it tends toward appeasement to so many who ascribe to conspiracies among the Vatican, and that, especially in the early chapters, there is a bit of excess wordiness.Oh, and the single utterance of the foul language related to intercourse. No use of this verb opens the topic up to a wider audience, whereas using the word only once shuts has the same impact of discerning readers as a dozen or two would.Despite this objections, there were some points that I enjoyed enough to rate it four stars.What I liked about the tale most was the manner in which the author is able to evoke my own inner thoughts and to stimulate my own curiosity. I could imagine myself as the younger plumber or as the journalist only too willing to inform the world of the discovery of a treasure trove.Below I have included a brief excerpt so a hint of the writer’s style can be gleaned in your effort to decide if this tale, reminiscent of Dan Brown’s Da Vinci Code or Angels and Demons, is a tale right for you.EXCERPTWhile Lucie and Rabea were waiting impatiently for Heinrich von Stetten to call back, they speculated about the reasons for Lukas’s arrest.“Let’s approach the whole thing logically,” said Rabea. “What are the facts? This afternoon apparently Lukas met with Superior General Bentivoglio. The latter was murdered soon afterward. Our superintendent of police assumes that Lukas was the last person to see him alive, and bingo!”“He wasn’t the last person to see him alive, of course,” Lucie amplified. “The murderer was.”“Ergo,” Rabea went on, “who killed him? It should be possible to find out, I reckon. After all, not just anyone can waltz into the Vatican. Every visitor has to register with the Swiss Guard, and there must be a couple hundred CCTVs dotted around the walls of the Vatican State. Even if the murderer entered legitimately, he’d have had to get past Bentivoglio’s secretary,” she reasoned, not knowing that neither Lukas’s meeting nor the murder had taken place there at all.“If it’s true what you said this morning about him being seriously ill with cancer, he didn’t have long to live in any case. I’m less interested in who murdered the superior general of the Jesuits than why he was murdered at this particular moment.”“Aha, and that brings us to the question of motive. Okay, Columbo, I can tell you’ve already formed a theory. Shoot!”“I’m sure you remember I mentioned I wanted to interview Bentivoglio? Well, in preparation for my planned interview I recently did some thorough research into the Society of Jesus. How much do you know about the Jesuit Order, Lucie?”“Oh dear, to my shame I have to admit my knowledge of it is based largely on historical novels. Until Lukas joined the club, I regarded all Jesuits as fanatical demagogues, but I do know that the order was founded over 450 years ago by a Spaniard named Loyola, and that Jesuit priests are regarded as a Catholic elite because they allow only the best and brightest to join their ranks.
