The adventures of a writer from Rome to Greece and Egypt By Gregory Smith I haven't finished the book, but I love the 50% I've read so far, This is a very long book, my Kindle doesn't display pages but it's taken me a while to get to the middle. However, it's fascinating. Unlike other books about Rome, this focuses on the ancient Republic, before Rome had occupied Greece and Egypt. It also focuses on a writer or scrivener instead of a soldier, that's very refreshing. I love legionaires and war stories, but sometimes it's good to read about other people.What I like is how it shows how a plebe catches a break by saving a son of a noble from drowning, and all the twists and turns his life takes afterwards. There is some sex, he does visit brothels as a teenager and adult. There is some slavery, some war in which the main character participates, but overall, I'm fascinated with how Ken Farmer did his homework to show us how these people lived, how they traveled, the dangers they faced.Even the language is different, instead of "big boobs" you'll see "enormous mammaries." This book is a real tour-de-force, tink about it, he did his homework not just for Rome but for Greece, Egypt, and Persia. Really well done.
3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Excellent Story By Joe Corso This is the second book I have read of Ken Farmer's and like the first book I found it very enjoyable reading. Farmer has a great writing style, he brings you into the story and you feel as if you were a part of it. This is not a book that you can pick up and read in one night, but if you are going on a cruise or a trip, take this book with you. You won't be sorry. Great writing job Ken Farmer.The Time Traveler

Good story, but atrocious writing By Amazon Customer Farmer actually wrote an interesting story about the son of a fisherman who through good luck is able to receive an education and become a scribe. Various events then cause the hero, Junius, to travel from Rome to Greece, Egypt, and then back to the city of his birth. Along the way, Junius becomes involved in some momentous events, such as the destruction of the Athenian navy at Aegospotami and the burning of Rome by the Gauls. The story is generally interesting, although labored at certain points, and involves a period in history, the early Roman Republic, not much written about.Unfortunately, the writing is atrocious. The editing is non-existent (example, the word "through" is always "though" in the book), the writer seems to have no knowledge of the rules of English grammar whatsoever, and he writes in a stilted fashion in an attempt to make the speech of the characters sound archaic, but which just makes them difficult to understand.However, at a price of $1.09, I would have to recommend the book.
