It starts with a school shooting. It ends with the return of an evil as ancient as the skeleton of the universe.

In the middle, normal garden-variety people must figure out how to live their everyday lives—how to survive!—after they discover that all those childhood horror stories … well, most of them are true. When the hot call comes over the radio: “Code Red! Active shooter at Carlisle Elementary School,” Police Sergeant Jack Carpenter has one job and only one job. Find the gunman; take him out. He rushes into the school, fully armed and focused on cold, hard reality. But what happens to him in the next few hours shatters the world as he has always known it. And in the next three days, everything Jack Carpenter believes about himself, about life and reality, about good and evil and the whole nature of the universe will be challenged. Can it possibly be true—seriously?—that invisible monsters prowl among us every day? That there exists in the real world a winged creature more horrifying than any Hollywood-animated, computer-generated, mechanical unreality? And that the single-minded mission of that beast—a creation of absolute, soul-less evil—is to kill Jack Carpenter? That’s crazy! Fairy-tale-science-fiction-horror-movie-bogeyman crap! Bottom line: it flat-out cannot possibly be true. But it is.

Interview with the Author

Q - What makes The Knowing special? A - It’s real. Some things really are unexplainable. As a paranormal thriller, The Knowing can be disturbing but it’s not about zombies or vampires or people who turn into werewolves or giant bears or attack-gerbils. The characters in The Knowing are folks you could bump carts with in a small town grocery store, so when the unexplainable starts to happen to them, you realize the same thing could happen to you. Q - Why did you write a series? A - Because the story was too big for 1 book. Even for 2. Writing a series gave me the chance to tell a sprawling tale of spiritual warfare and dark psychic suspense that spans a quarter of a century. Something happened to these people when they were 12 years old, but every memory of that summer has been wiped from their minds. Q - Is this Christian fiction? A -There’s no religion in it. There are scriptural realities, though, that most Christians say they believe--but really don’t. Theresa Washington from The Knowing says it best: “The smartest thing Satan ever done was to get people to believe he don’t exist.” Some have called The Knowing dark and disturbing. I think I’d call it ... a scary story about supernatural spiritual warfare—that’s mostly true. Q - Why should readers give this book a try? A - Because it’s a paranormal thriller set in a small town that will capture your heart and mind, grab you in a reality so gripping you’ll decide you can fold the towels later and the lawn will still be out there to mow tomorrow. Don’t start the book at bedtime or you might still be awake at dawn. *Amazon Tags: spiritual warfare fiction, occult horror demons, horror bestsellers, psychological thrillers best sellers, paranormal psychic suspense, suspense thrillers and mysteries best sellers, Christian contemporary United States dark disturbing gory scary vengeful small town satanism conspiracy American classic

By The Old Guy OK, I received a copy of this book so I could post an honest review of "The Knowing", so here goes...this is as honest as it gets...Some books you kind of ease into. You crack the cover (or in this case, turn on your tablet), look at the title page and turn to the first chapter and begin. Usually the first 10/20/30 pages introduce you to the "cast", set the scene and give you a little background on the adventure you're about to begin. Other books (VERY few in number!) grab you by the scruff of the neck in the first few lines and don't let go. You sit down and think I'll just read a chapter or two just to find out what the story is about and the next thing you know it's 3 hours later and you're half way through the book wihout even taking a sip of the coffee you poured just before you sat down...and now it's ice cold! But not the story...it's burning up the pages! From the very start I was so entwined in the lives of Daniel, Jack, and the rest of the "cast" of this drama the I absolutely could not stop reading. I would tell myself, "OK, just one more chapter..." and that would soon be forgotten when I got to the end of that chapter and I had to...just HAD to...find out what came next! The book itself is kind of a cross between King's "It" and his "The Stand" but with Ninie's special touch. She has a way of drawing the reader into her world, making them a part of the story. She makes you feel as though you really know the people she creates. They come alive on the page for me with a reality that few authors can match...and yes, I'm including the "Main-Stream/New York Times Best Seller Author List"!I'm not going to give a scene by scene description of "The Knowing" (plenty of her fans will be doing that here) but I guarantee that if you pick up this book and read only the first few pages (notice that I didn't say the first few chapters!) you'll be totally, 100% hooked! This is her 8th book (to date) and I've read all of them with gusto! Reading her novels reminds me of the thrill I used to get back in the early 70's when Stephen King was golden! (Why do I keep mentioning King and Ninie together in this "review"?...because in this old man's humble opinion they are of the same caliber!) That's how I feel about her books and believe me, VERY FEW authors working today would get that kind of review from me!Okay, I've said this before but just for the record I want to underline the fact that I may be Ninie Hammon's biggest fan. I absolutely devour every word she writes and want more...more...more! And, it looks like in her current offering (The Knowing) I'm going to get my wish. Not only did she out-do herself with this novel but there's 2 more to follow!I can hardly wait!!!

It kept my interest all the way through. The characters were not only believable, they're people you'd want to know (well... the good guys, anyway!).I'm sure others will come along and write a better synopsis than I ever could. But I do want to point out a few things.First... if you're squeamish reading about animal cruelty, this may not be the book for you. I was sickened, upset, and heart-broken for the animals that the "bad guys" killed (or tortured/maimed), yet I believe these scenes were necessary to the plot to show just how evil these guys are. Also, there are other scenes of violence (again, it's to be expected in this type of book with these types of characters).Second... If you're offended by the "N" word, be forewarned that it's used several times in this book (again, by the bad guys).Third... There are times when Ms. Hammon writes as the character would actually speak, so it sometimes makes it difficult to read. I'm used to more elevated speech - not used to reading the vernacular. e.g. "I know you got this, that ain't none of what's happnin' escaped your notice. And I know you don't hold much with a body bein' scared because that's telling you I don't b'lieve you're big enough to handle my piddly little problems." Actually, that isn't too bad. I just can't find the one section in particular that had me re-reading it. Oh well. You, hopefully, get my drift.I don't often give 5 stars. But this book certainly deserves it! I'm anxiously awaiting the sequel! This book does NOT end with a cliffhanger... thank Heaven, but it does leave certain questions unanswered. It had me on the edge of my seat - especially the last half of the book. And I found I was reading faster and faster to get to the end. But I didn't want to skip a single word of this fantastic book! Most of all, though, it's made me think of all the evil in the world today and wonder what we're going to do about it!I received a free copy of this book for my honest review, but I've also purchased it because I just want... no NEED... to have my own copy! (The one I was sent had typos in it, and I want a perfectly edited copy!).

I have read several of this author's books and loved them but was concerned that I might not like this one as much...and I had promised an honest review. I need not have worried. I was hooked in before I finished the second paragraph. Every chapter hinted at a background secret while being riveting in the current action. Ninie Hammon is a masterful storyteller with a colorful writing style. I was constantly torn between wanting to read fast and end the suspense and reading slowly to savor every word. A marvelous find from an author who manages to make every book unique ..no plot formulas here!
