By Anne Wouldn't it be grand if a place existed in North America where people with their pets could live without leash laws or off limit areas for their animal companions? Well, welcome to Wagtail - where pets are allowed in stores & restaurants and where a walk with your owner is a joy of exploration & exercise without the constraint of a leash. One of the businesses in town is the Sugar Maple Inn where Holly Miller & her grandmother welcome people & their pets. In this book, the third in the Paws and Claws series, Holly, minus her travelling grandmother, is hosting a murder mystery weekend. When a real body is found in addition to the pretend corpse, everyone appears to pitch in, even the murder mystery participants. Can they solve both the pretend & real mystery before someone else dies? What could be better - pets & a murder mystery? This book is great combination of two of my favourite things. When you add a hint of romance, wonderful recipes for both people & dogs, a great setting & the wonderful premise of a murder mystery weekend you have a very enjoyable and entertaining book that was hard to put down! I am looking forward to going back and reading the first 2 books in the series. I received this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

By Elizabeth Caldwell Holly Miller has been left in charge of the Sugar Maple Inn and there is a snow storm coming at the same time as the community is offering a murder mystery game. Except that there was only supposed to be one body and one set of clues! Now an extra body turns up, and this one is really dead. Extra clues are turning up that upset members of the community, and Holly and her friends have to move quickly to save the game and try to find out who committed murder.Adding to the well-drawn characters are the cats and dogs of the town of Wagtail, and the dogs who are part of a try-out program. One couple in town for the mystery weekend and the "If the Dog Fits" program disagrees over which of the available canines will be right for them, revealing possible cracks in the marriage. A book club has come to participate as well, with one overly competitive member. This mystery flows smoothly, and in a number of directions as Holly tries to sift through fact and fiction. This is a likable town with a lot of nice (and a few not-so-nice) people. Krista Davis has written characters and situations that leave you rooting for the good guys and wondering right along with Holly how to put the puzzle together. This is the third book in the Wagtail series. They certainly can be read out of order, but I would recommend reading the whole series!I received an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Although it is the third book in the Paws and Claws book series, it was stand alone and the first one that I had read. From the first page of this book I was engaged in life in Wagtail, Virginia, a town that is very pet friendly. There are a large number of delightful dogs and cats who live in the town; they are welcome everywhere and roam freely. The central character Is Holly Miller who has been left in charge of her grandmother’s Sugar Maple Inn while the grandmother takes a much overdo vacation. Holly and the residents of the town decide to have a murder mystery weekend. In addition to the pretend murder, a real murder occurs. Everyone in town, including the murder mystery weekend guests, gets involved in solving the real murder. There is a developing romantic interest for Holly as well. Everything is further complicated by an intense snow storm loss of electric power. There are several story threads which eventually reach satisfying conclusions. The book includes a wide variety of interesting characters. It also has an underlying current of humor that I enjoyed thoroughly. A bonus are the recipes included for both humans and dogs. This was a fun read and I look forward to reading the earlier books in the series.

I remember trying to start Ms. Sivec's Seduction and Snacks awhile ago, and not getting into it at all. So I set it aside thinking I just wasn't in the mood. Turns out, she may just not be a good fit for me as a reader. The same thing happened with this story -- I had a hell of a time getting into it and feeling out the characters. I kept plugging away b/c I figured it was a shorter story, and I wanted to know what everyone else was raving about. And quite honestly, I would occasionally catch glimpses of moments that got to me. But they just weren't enough in the end.The humour didn't fit me at ALL (putting me in the minority). It was terribly outlandish and over the top, and I didn't realize that I wasn't into that kind of thing, but apparently I'm not. B/C I just had skeptical cat face going on through most of it. I seriously don't think I laughed once. Which makes me really sad, and kind of lonely in my little corner of un-fun-ness over here. I can't really elaborate on it either, cause I can't articulate what didn't work for me without coming across kind of rude to everyone who enjoys that sort of thing. I will say that it sometimes felt a little forced.I also found the story a bit formulaic for me. I actually usually don't mind that, but I guess since I wasn't enjoying the humour, it just stood out more for me. I didn't end up appreciating all the times the hero called himself a pussy for feeling (even though that's probably very realistic for some guys). And I didn't really care for the times the heroine called herself a slut. The steamy moments weren't bad, but they would inevitably be interrupted by the humour that I wasn't a fan of. Heck, at one point the heroine called her vagina a doodlebug (or something to that effect), and it kind of took me out of the moment, you know?So how did I end up rounding up to 3 if I didn't ever laugh? Well, some of the heartwarming moments really got to me. It's like how in general I'm not a huge fan of the Simpsons (though my hubby loves it), but I actually really love the heart-warming episodes. Well, even if they did fall in love kind of quickly, I really felt their feelings for each other, and I enjoyed Sam's opening up to the idea of the holiday and spending it with a family for the first time. I just wanted more of that.So yeah...bit disappointed right now. I hate being the odd one out of a party, even if I call myself a hipster enough times that it shouldn't surprise me that I don't like what the masses love....but sometimes I just don't want to be different, you know? Oh well...

I didn't think I could laugh as hard as I did with the Chocolate Series, but Tara Sivec has once again put the fun in dysfunctional like no one else can.Noel Holiday meets Sam Stocking and not only do the sparks fly but they quickly go from strangers to bedmates, all to save face and not hurt Noel's family. A family who treats Christmas like it was a once in a lifetime event with a dad who could put Clark Griswold to shame, a Auncle who may or may not see squirrels in sweaters and a mom who created mistletoe from pot leaves! I'm still chuckling just thinking of the absolute craziness this family creates at a moment's notice. It's a wonder Sam didn't go running after he was chosen to be a substitute for Noel's boyfriend who she ran away from. This is just the story to make these stressful days feels lighter. I thoroughly enjoyed myself from the very first pages and the humor that is deep within Tara Sivec is always a welcome sight to behold. I'm completely amazed at her ability to make me laugh like no one else can...while reading. I literally had to wipe my eyes several times just to be able to continue.I have to add that there are numerous editing and typos issues but they didn't detract from the story. Not sure if the author is using someone new but some were a bit of a surprise for someone as seasoned as she is.A great surprise and true joy from beginning to end.A very delightful 5 stars!
