One of the most revered names in sf and fantasy, the incomparable Roger Zelazny was honored with numerous prizes—including six Hugo and three Nebula Awards—over the course of his legendary career. Among his more than fifty books, arguably Zelazny’s most popular literary creations were his extraordinary Amber novels. Having now accepted the responsibilities as ruler to the world of Amber, Corwin finds himself the target of sibling treachery, and must seek guidance in a land of visions, where a sinister prediction foretells his doom.

By Two Bears The first five books in the Amber Chronicles are my favorite Fantasy series.I have the first three in kindle format.I really prefer to read books in kindle format for tgr following reasons.1. I have my entire library of 1,800 + books in my iPhone this way if i have down time waiting for meetings, appointments at bus stop i am not bored very long. Take my phone our open the kindle app and start flipping psges.2. I can change the font and the size of the font so it is easier to see the text.3. I can increase or decrease the level of back lighting, and even the background color. I usually use Sepia (aged paper) or green. In the last five years i havd easily read 540 books. I have read 42 books since January 1,2016.I tell people that i read 90-125 books in a year and they think i am a speed reader or resd constantly.I used to be a speed reader before my eyesight went so bad. You know thst E at thr top of the chart? For me even that is blurry. 30 years ago i made money as a professional photographer i used an SLR Minolta XG1 that i had to manually focus.Back yo the Amber Chronicles.I LOVE this series, and hopeThe Hand Of OberonThe Courts Of Chaoswill br released soon in Kindle format.

The linchpin of the Corwin Chronicles about which the plot turns to sinister effect By Brent Jablonski About the Kindle edition:Another tour de force of editorial excellence. I looked for conversion errors, but did not find any. The text seems perfect and unadulterated to me. Combine that with a nice new cover painting (moodily lit, as appropriate for this novel) by Gary McCluskey and you have a wonderful Kindle edition. The Novel:This is the central book in the Corwin Chronicles. Thus far what we've seen in the series has seemed to follow something of a predictable arc. Corwin vies for the Crown of Amber; he loses and is imprisoned; he escapes and ultimately triumphs. All this time Corwin's antagonist has been his brother Eric. Along the way there have been hints of something darker happening, but these have served as backdrop and vague foreboding. Now Eric is dead and Corwin sits as Regent over Amber; dark creatures continue to trouble Amber from out of Shadow; and the hints of previous books come to the forefront as Corwin begins to understand that all has not been as it seemed. There is a darker and deeper game afoot and in this game Corwin is uncertain of the players. He must now fashion an uneasy alliance among the royal family and uncover the true shape of the threat before his Regency comes to abrupt disaster.Sharp dialog and careful pacing push the narrative forward. The plot is a buffet of intrigue and revelations served with a side dish of herring of ruddy hues. Dessert is another cliff-hanger ending. This is the pivotal work in a landmark fantasy series that you should be reading. Buy it, read it and learn 'the true state of affairs'.

The keystone of the great masterpi By Dechen Thurman The original 5 chronicles of Amber by Roger Zelazny are really two long books split in half, and a hasty wrap up novella. Sign of the Unicorn is not my favorite of the 5, yet it sets up my favorite Hand of Oberon. For me in the Merlin chronicles which follow the Amber series the 4th volume is my favorite. This book has a lot of intrigue and narration of events that happened before the beginning of the first book. This subtly reinforces the daring and risky exposures of the first novel in which the protagonist has no memory of himself of this vibrant sci-fi or fantasy (hotly debates which genre) universe. There could be criticism that there is not much action or danger. However the mystery and who-dun-it element of the Amber chronicles push this landmark work of fiction onto the mystery shelf as well as fantasy or sci-fi. Original 70's cover art WAY COOLER than later covers including this edition. Please keep the Zelazny titles flowing into the Kindle as I am enjoying re-buying and rereading my favorite author of all time!

An uneven story By TDJ, aka Karen The story was pleasant enough, but I think Sophia Lynn should have done more to smooth the way between Dharr's first and second engagements, and to build her lovers as two fully realized characters, as well as to show their growing feelings for each other, despite the circumstances of their relationship. All the ingredients for those things are here, but they are not as well executed as they should have been. In fact, in some instances, they are missing entirely! So the story has noticeable hiccups (well, they're noticeable to me!), and by the last few chapters, that authorial inattention to important details spread to the proofreading, which went pear-shaped. Dharr and Alana deserved better from their creator than they got.

I liked the role of Alana whom has a mixed heritage Lebanese and Italian. She was also taught how to speak in Arabic even though her accent is way off. Dharr is a good sheikh and finds out his father's plan before it was too late.

Six-year-old Gretl Schmidt is on a train bound for Aushwitz. Jakób Kowalski is planting a bomb on the tracks.

As World War II draws to a close, Jakób fights with the Polish resistance against the crushing forces of Germany and Russia. They intend to destroy a German troop transport, but Gretl’s unscheduled train reaches the bomb first.

Gretl is the only survivor. Though spared from the concentration camp, the orphaned German Jew finds herself lost in a country hostile to her people. When Jakób discovers her, guilt and fatherly compassion prompt him to take her in. For three years, the young man and little girl form a bond over the secrets they must hide from his Catholic family.

But she can’t stay with him forever. Jakób sends Gretl to South Africa, where German war orphans are promised bright futures with adoptive Protestant families—so long as Gretl’s Jewish roots, Catholic education, and connections to communist Poland are never discovered.

Separated by continents, politics, religion, language, and years, Jakób and Gretl will likely never see each other again. But the events they have both survived and their belief that the human spirit can triumph over the ravages of war have formed a bond of love that no circumstances can overcome.

30 of 31 people found the following review helpful. Lovely Story By rebelmomof2 This is one of the loveliest tales I have read in a long time. I normally don't like reading what passes for "Christian literature" these days; not because of its contents, but because of its poorer language structure. This book is written well and obviously, well-edited.I have read a lot of books about the Holocaust, both fiction and nonfiction. This one doesn't really qualify as a Holocaust book because it didn't delve into the deeper issues that faced the countries at the time. It was the starting point for the novel, but it is a personal novel about 2 people who connected because of the war. Gretl Schmidt is a young girl who lost her mother and grandmother and her sister. Jakob is a Polish student working to liberate Poland from the Germans when he rescued her. He had found her in the woods after Gretl jumped off the train. His family took care of her till he read of an organization taking German kids to South Africa to people who wanted to adopt orphans. There are a historical facts woven into the story of Gretl and Jakob; their lives after the war went separate ways. The author, Irma Joubert is a teacher who turned to writing and it shows in this book. The stories of the two characters are interwoven in a seamless path as they grew up in different parts of the world only to be reunited years later. There are stories of how Poland became a communist country; there are stories of how the Catholic faith colors the lives of the people in Poland and how people in South Africa view the Catholic church through the personal viewpoints of varying characters. There are historical tidbits interwoven through the every day lives of the characters. It is also a love story. It is a lovely story. It is a story of faith as well. It is a book to curl up with on those dreary winter nights. It is a book to discuss over book clubs. It is just an inspiring international tale that ends well. It sounds so simplistic but it really isn't. It is a good story and I can see why it is a best seller in other parts of the world. I hope it becomes as successful here in the States as well.

WILL LEAVE YOU WITH A QUESTION By Brenda R THE GIRL FROM THE TRAIN isn't really a Holocaust book because it didn't jump into the much deeper happenings that the countries at that time had to deal with. It is where this book starts that tells us about 2 people who came together because of and during the war.Gretl Schmidt, age 6, had seen way too much cruelty in the world. At the start of World War II, she and her sister, Elza, jump from a train just before a bridge it is to be blown up. That train was filled with Jews and was on its way to Poland, where the concentration camps were. Gretl survives but her sister dies from her injuries. Gretl then finds herself in the care of a young freedom fighter and Polish Resistance member named Jakób Kowalski. Even though Jakób is 15 years older there is a strong bond and friendship that develops between them. Gretl looks to Jakób as a protector and defender. As the danger gets worse, Gretl is sent to South Africa where a new family adopts her. She can never forget about Jakób, her first childhood love. What will happen when the adult Gretl reunites with Jakób, who has also come to Africa for a new start? Will the bonds of childhood friendship remain or become more? This is a tale spanning 15 years and two continents with a World War thrown in to make for a much better story. For such a long period of time, the story is not exploited with a large cast. Only 2 characters, with a few others thrown in, makes the story more intimate. The story will surprise you but will never seem boring. At times I even found myself with tears in my eyes. I did however have to have an interpretation guide handy at all times. At some points I could find no meaning or explanation for some of the foreign words. If I had not had a way to translate some of the sentences I would have had a hard time in understanding parts of the story. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read an emotional yet uplifting tale set during World War II.

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. There is a great deal of history woven into this novel By Debi @2014 & Beyond The Girl from the Train uniquely spans over around 15 years from the time Gretl is six to age 21. During this time, Gretl learns to adapt to different environments and changes her identity as needed. This novel is a coming of age story. It is also about overcoming tragedy and resiliency. There is a great deal of history woven into this novel; history of WWII, Poland and Africa specifically. At times the storyline of The Girl from the Train got a little to "political" for my liking, but that might be because political reading is just not my thing. The author does a great job in getting the details right in the harsh settings of occupied Poland, both Nazi and Soviet. The world of secrecy, betrayal, and societal fear makes the reader sweat bullets right along with Jacob. The story, while based upon tragic historical events, was very hopeful and I enjoyed the historical action intertwined within the plot. It was about a little girl who was on her way to Auschwitz but fled from the train at six years old and was found by a young Polish man, Jakób who is a freedom fighter. He takes Gretl to his family farm where he can protect and keep her safe, and she stays there for three years. There grows friendship between two of them, even there is 13 years gap in age. Jakób's family is growing and his mother tells him he must find a new home for the Jewish girl. Jakób finds an an article in the paper where they are looking for Aryans to be adopted by South Africans. Jakób takes Gretl to some orphanages until he finally ends up at a Red Cross, where they are aware of the project and they say they will take Gretl. (Personally, I never knew German orphans were sent to South Africa.) From that time on, Jakób has no idea what happens to Gretl nor does Gretl know about Jakób's life over the next ten years. After being adopted, she becomes Grietjie Neethling, the beloved daughter of Oom Bernard and Tannie Kate Neethling. Grietjie begins to learn Afrikaans and English and studies scripture at Sunday school, all the while dreaming of one day leaving for college and reconnecting with Jakób. Jakób finds her years later, their bond still strong despite years of separation. This book is a story of war, redemption, and love, but in all honesty, The Girl from the Train was kind of slow for me - especially the beginning to the middle. I stuck with it though, and by the second half of the book, it began to pick up a bit and keep my attention. I 'm guessing that the reason it took me a little while to get used to the author's writing style has something to do with English not being her first language.I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publishers and Fiction Guild in exchange for this post, which is my honest review and unbiased opinion.
