Review "A riveting Victorian Romance, The Last Earl by Lara Blunte proves a literal tidal force in a genre which often suffers from a lack of originality. Beautifully written in prose that vividly capture Blunte's evocative settings, the mood is further augmented by a vibrant blend of emotion and subtle levity." - Book Viral.

By Amazon Customer PatH I wasn't sure I would like this book since it seemed like it might have some darkness to the story and generally I like historical romances that have a light, charming quality to the them. I'm really glad I was wrong--I loved this story. The characters were people I would enjoy knowing and even though they did some things that I would not normally approve of the story supported their actions and made them seem acceptable. There was only one really stupid mistake the h made but it was necessary to the story. The book summary pretty much covers the plot so I won't repeat it. I didn't think the h was that vain--she simply was aware of her beauty, wealth, and charm and realized men were probably only interested in her money. She had been taking care of her shy, sensitive mother and Great Aunt since her father died when she was 13 so she had learned to make important decisions and feels her choices should be respected by others. Then she meets a man who she is really attracted to for the first time in her life. She doesn't care for the rules of society and how different the rules are for men and women and decides to make her own choices. The H has his own agenda that does not include allowing himself to become vulnerable by falling in love; and he has a really good reason for feeling that way. The H has secrets he can't tell the h and he doesn't want to drag her into the dangerous world he lives every day. But even though he tries to keep his distance from the h she chooses to act on her own hoping he will change his mind and open his heart to her. When the H has to return to the life in which he lived for the last 8 years the h won't just stand by and let him go; she follows him into the dangerous world of revenge, murder, lies, and death. She calls on all her inner strength to survive danger and pain to be with him and show him how to love. There is lots of romance in this book, no vivid descriptions of sex (but the reader is aware of what happened), but some fondling and innuendo, no outright vulgarity or pornography. Mild profanity but very little of it. Another reviewer hinted at religious stereotypes but I didn't see that at all; no characters were shown as better or worse because of their religious affiliations. Some typos but hardly noticeable. Grammar was good. Overall, a very professionally written and edited book.

I did not know it was part of a Trilogy until finishing the book and going back to see what else Ms. Blunte has written. I find her voice refreshing and her characters wonderfully layered. She has written a carefully crafted romance story, full of suspenseful drama while reveals a plot filled with twists and turns. It will keep you turning the page. I kept telling myself, I will read one more chapter. Now it is 11:30 pm and I say, one more chapter. Midnight! One more chapter. 1:00 am and my eyes are crossing but ONE MORE CHAPTER! Needless to say, I finished the book in one reading and went to my computer with glazed eyes at 2:00 am to buy the rest of the Trilogy.I am looking forward to more of her books and so happy to have added her to my list of "must buy authors."

I almost stopped reading at the beginning, because Catherine seemed so vain – but then I kept telling myself, one more chapter, one more, one more. The writing is good, and the dialogues and situations as well.I am glad I kept reading, because this is a story of growth and change. It was interesting to see a very strong woman almost defeated by a passion, then by her own stubbornness, but it’s interesting too to see her finally understand what a greater love is.The physical beauty of the characters and settings, the Gothic touches, the exotic backdrop of Constantinople, the mystery over the murders of Adrian’s family and the passion between the two MCs created a roller coaster reading experience.I very much recommend it to lovers of Victorian romance! Lara Blunte is indeed a talented, gifted writer.
