Be with me. Stay with me. Just until I don’t need you anymore…’ When Willa Henderson flew to Chicago, she was just supposed to pack up her brother’s apartment and ship everything inside it back to LA. That included packing up his roommate's things up as well. It was a big ask, but Dave was her big brother, so Willa agreed. The last thing she was expecting was to run into said roommate - the intense German named, André Bauer, a photojournalist who was supposed to be in Afghanistan working for the next few weeks - on her first night there. She also wasn’t expecting him to throw her out on her a** without even trying to let her explain who she was and why she was there. Let’s just say it was…hate at first sight. From the moment they met, they didn’t like each other, and neither of them really had any interest in changing that fact. But one thing they did know, was that they were unequivocally attracted, and it didn’t take too long for them to collide. With both of them screwed up by their pasts, neither of them could handle a relationship if they tried - André is a self-confessed a**hole. Willa is a self-confessed commitment-phone and gets angry whenever she feels. Then there's Willa’s brother, who could very well kill André if he found out he’d slept with his sister. But, when desires go unchecked, there’s little that can change the outcome, and eventually Willa and André agreed to give in – just until they got each other out of their system. They expected it would take a week, maybe two. Then they could walk away without anyone getting hurt. Before each other, that arrangement might have worked out, but there was something there - an intensity they couldn't explain. As layers are peeled back and secrets are revealed, they find themselves in a state of need that neither was prepared for... Before You is a standalone contemporary romance with no cliffhanger and its own HEA.

Willa & Andre were two lost souls that came together and found true love. They both had traumatic childhoods that they could not speak about with anyone. I will not give away any spoilers. I highly recommend this book. Thank you Eve Cates for another amazing read!!!!! I loved it!

By Joselyn A Perry 3-3.5 Solid StarsI was lucky enough to receive an ARC before this book released and what a treat it was:) I truly adore Author Eve Cates and her books and this was a really great surprise.....a standalone, YAY!!!!! Sorry, sometimes I don't have the time to get bogged down in serials and/or cliffy's and trilogies and so for me personally, most of the time, I LOVE a standalone. Now with all of that being said, this book was just ok for me! I guess for me I had some minor issues with Willa, hmmmm, I liked her but I didn't if that makes sense. OK, let me re-phrase or try to explain, I liked her overall character but she just "lacked" that extra umph for me. I didn't quite connect with her until the latter half of the book. The fist half, hmmmm, I had some issues with how she treated the newfound "relationship" or whatever she was trying to call it or rather what she was trying to deny, she got more on my nerves than anything:(Now Andre, he was hot, he was mysterious, he was like watching a "panther" move about his prey, I loved it and although I really LOVED him, even his character was "lacking" something. For me this story was too insta-love for me considering all the factors and don't get me wrong, I wanted them together BUT wished that I had a bit more angst to it as well. I would have liked a bit more "drama" and I don't mean foolish drama for the sake of adding to a story but just a little bit more of "something", see that's what I mean, I felt like I was missing that "bam" in this story.Congrats to Author Eve Cates on her new release. If you like a quick read, a storyline that moves pretty fast and is low on drama and angst, pick this up:)

Just until I don't need you anymore...In the Prologue we get a look at the tragic event that fourteen Willa witnesses. It is so heartbreaking. We jump ahead ten years to her brother Dave talking her into letting him and his roommate move in with her. She agrees to fly to Chicago to finish packing his things up for the movers because he is heading out of town.I have to say that the first time she meets her brothers roommate Andre he is a real jerk to her and I felt so bad. The way he treated her was terrible. We find that Andre also has a tragic past that causes him to keep everyone at a distance. As they get to know each other the attraction between Andre and Willa builds. They decide to have a sex only relationship. Can they stick to their agreement? Will they be able to help each other move on from their past tragedies?I hoped that things could always be this way. It was the first time that I ever had hope for happiness. Before you was a wonderful story about overcoming tragedy and finding love. I loved the characters, you could feel their connection. This is a stand alone romance that I highly recommend to all romance lovers. Eve Cates does a great job of pulling you in with her writing.Thank you for a great read!ARC provided by author in exchange for an honest review. Reviewed by MAustin from Alpha Book Club

By Gillone Washington Sarah Brooks has done a brilliant job in The Storm Explodes, she has built up the characters roles beautifully, by allowing the reader to see where the relationship between Senator Matthew Storm and Michaela is headed. It is so intriguing to see how Matthew's plans on a power play for the White House has left him feeling jealous over the relationship that Michaela is starting to develop with Senator Masson ,even though he encouraged the flirting between them it would seem that he has lit a flame of desire in Senator Masson loins for Michaela.Meanwhile Michaela just wants Matthew. To be the Matthew that she fell for in Chicago, sweet and charming and not the Matthew who was so politically power driven ,she just longs for a simpler time ,the way things used to be. Matthew knows the bewitching qualities that Michaela possesses on the Senators. He wants Michaela beauty to help charm his way into the seat of President. What ever happens next it may challenge and test the strength of Matthew and Michaela trust in each other.Sarah Brooks has planted a seed in the mind of the reader and I can't wait to see what direction she will allow this story to grow and blossom in.Review by ARC

She leaves work early and goes out on a night with her girlfriends . She stays out till 4;30 am. Matthews driver sees her enter with another intern who happens to be a male, who lives in the same building. She sleeps till 11:00 the next morning an Stephen calls her and tells her Senator Storm wants her to the office ASAP or she's fired. She gets up, showers and goes to office to find Matthew angry and yelling at everyone. By Nikki Brackett I received this book as an ARC in exchange for an honest review.I am glad they are done making Kayla flirt with Masson. I didn't care for the way that was going ... I like the fire Matthew and Kayla have both romantically and in the work place. They are a great team and they need to use their brains and not bodies to get what they want in Washington. They both are smart and intelligent and need to just use those two things to push their way in and that will be enough to get them into White House. They both have a fire in themselves when it comes to their passion for politics that you don't see everyday. That is all that's needed to make it where they can successfully make it big together.

At first glance, Phil Pendleton and his son Adam are just an ordinary father and son, no different from any other. They take walks in the park together, visit county fairs, museums, and zoos, and eat together overlooking the lake. Some might say the father is a little too accommodating given the lack of discipline when the child loses his temper in public. Some might say he spoils his son by allowing him to eat candy whenever he wants and set his own bedtimes. Some might say that such leniency is starting to take its toll on the father, given how his health has declined. What no one knows is that Phil is a prisoner, and that up until a few weeks ago and a chance encounter at a grocery store, he had never seen the child before in his life. A new novella from the Bram Stoker Award-winning author of THE TURTLE BOY and KIN.

Sour Candy, by Kealan Patrick Burke

Review "an excellent terror-filled novella....a stomach-twisting ride through the depths of horror, breathing new life into an often-stagnant part of the genre." -- Publisher's Weekly (starred review)"Sour Candy is spectacularly good. A brilliant premise, marvelously executed, it's as close to a perfect story as I can remember reading. I only wish I'd written it myself." -- Bentley Little, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of The Resort, and The Store."On top, Sour Candy is a parental nightmare. But just under the lid is a mindscrew-story of a man's life exploding. Like The Twilight Zone and the great, shorter stuff by Beaumont and Matheson, Kealan Patrick Burke opens a door that we didn't even know was in the house."-- Josh Malerman, author of Bird Box"Sour Candy is Kealan Patrick Burke at his beautifully hideous best.Original, compelling, and unsettling as hell, it's must-read horror!"-- Christopher Golden, New York Times #1 bestselling author of Dead Ringers"An unexpected knife-turn in psychological suspense..." -- Christopher Fowler, author of Nyctophobia, The Sand Men, and the Bryant & May series."a twisted exercise in psychological suspense" -- Cemetery Dance"Taut, frightening, almost painful to read (but isn't that a good thing in a horror tale?) with great characters and an O. Henry-on-acid ending, Sour Candy is a must-read for horror fans" -- Dread Central"...a stellar addition to the underrepresented "Evil child" sub-genre, and Adam is one of the nastiest, most original Evil Children I've ever come across...This is beautifully-written,exquisitely creepy stuff.....Highly recommended." -- The Crabby Reviewer"...one of the best psychological horror novellas I've read this year." -- Scream Magazine

From the Author SOUR CANDY Q&A   Q. Where did the idea for SOUR CANDY come from?   A. I first had the idea for SOUR CANDY on a sweltering hot July day back in the summer of 2013. I was at Walmart to do some quick shopping (and with me, there's never any other kind), and when I was in the candy aisle, this little kid started screeching his lungs out. Startled, I looked at him; he glared back, and then I looked at his mother, who looked so beaten down and depressed I immediately felt guilty for gawping. On my way home, I wondered what would happen if I got home and found that child waiting for me there, maybe to make me pay for looking in the first place. That was as far as the idea went and I never wrote it. A few weeks back, the rest of it came to me and I wrote it more or less in one sitting.   Q. There seems to be a hint of Lovecraftian horror in the book. Was this intentional?   A. I didn't set out to have any kind of Lovecraftian elements in the story, but by the time I reached a certain point, I knew I was consciously and rather gleefully weaving them in there. So yes, it's absolutely intentional.   Q. Right now, the book is a digital exclusive. Are there any plans for a print edition down the road?   A. Absolutely. I'm currently in talks with a publisher about a signed limited edition of the book. We haven't hashed out all the details just yet, but it's more or less a done deal.   Q. The cover, your own design, has gotten a lot of attention. It's also not very typical of your design work. Why the departure for SOUR CANDY and can you talk a bit about what inspired it?   I came across a stock art photograph online of a robed man wearing what appeared to be a deer mask, complete with antlers, and knew I had to use it in some way. Not only did it inspire certain elements in the story, it also inspired the cover. And while I usually blend multiple art pieces to get the effect I want, this one didn't need them. I played around with some solid colors and settled on red and it just jumped out at me, so I went with it. It is very different, but then, I think the story is quite different too from anything I've done before.

About the Author Born and raised in a small harbor town in the south of Ireland,Kealan Patrick Burke knew from a very early age that he was going to be a horror writer. The combination of an ancient locale, a horror-lovingmother, and a family full of storytellers, made it inevitable that hewould end up telling stories for a living. Since those formative years,he has written five novels, over a hundred short stories, sixcollections, and edited four acclaimed anthologies. In 2004, he washonored with the Bram Stoker Award for his novella The Turtle Boy.Kealan has worked as a waiter, a drama teacher, a mapmaker, a security guard,an assembly-line worker at Apple Computers, a salesman (for a day), abartender, landscape gardener, vocalist in a grunge band, curriculumcontent editor, fiction editor at Gothic.net, and, most recently, afraud investigator. When not writing, Kealan designs book covers through his company Elderlemon Design. A movie based on his short story "Peekers" is currently in development as a major motion picture.

He May Stick To You Like a Parasite By Mark Matthews If reading a story with enthusiasm, a smirk, and a curious mind about what happens next is the gauge of success, this book nails it.Sour Candy doesn't worry so much if you believe the premise. But it does make it believable by putting you in place where you have already been; A Walmart on the candy aisle, feeling a bit out of place but needing to grab a few things to get back to your real life with bigger dreams. Not Walmart dreams, that's for sure. Well, you know that screaming kid in the aisle? not just screaming, but shrieking until your contact lenses shatter? Well, be careful for he may stick to you like a parasite. In Sour Candy, the main character's worst fears come true when he is saddled with a child at his side, and his current partner has run off. See, he'd already broken up with a woman due to not wanting children, and now this strange boy is calling him Daddy. He's loosing his health (too much Candy), loosing his sanity, feeling trapped, and you feel his desperate measures and start to root for him to get out of his mess. You feel his relief at a false summit of sanity, but the book ends in a lovely way that is simply another beginning. Have I spoiled something? I hope not.I never read Kealan's books without learning something about writing horror (I have this dream to write a book called "101 things To Learn About writing Horror from reading KIN") (I'm joking less than you think.) Sour Candy is no exception. I read it in three sittings, and enjoyed the time spent.

The story SOUR CANDY, by Kealan Patrick Burke, is perhaps the best psychological horror novella that I have read, to date, in 2015!Phil Pendleton is a man living a happy life with his girlfriend, Lori, when an innocent encounter with a woman and boy at Walmart send him spiraling into near mental insanity. On the way home, a fender-bender begins to show Phil just how MUCH has changed. . . Suddenly, Phil finds the boy from the store at his home, and everyone around informing him that this is his son, Adam.“In a situation in which every rational person is telling you a fact and you’re the one who denies it, doesn’t that make you the one most likely wrong?”From that moment on, Phil finds himself in the midst of a Twilight Zone nightmare, where escape is not an option. “He felt trapped in a bizarre otherworld in which everything was crooked, but the harder he fought to extricate himself, the more tangled he became.”Burke effortlessly controls the circumstances of Pendleton’s new “life”, even bringing in some Lovecraftian themes. The emotional and mental torment Phil goes through, I found more chilling in nature than any sort of “physical” torture. We see first hand the slowly diminishing control that he retains on his sanity, and begin to wonder that if he were able to extract himself from this sham of an existence, would he ever be able to truly “live” again.Even with the way Phil’s resolve slowly weakens into an almost acceptance of his situation, I was shocked at the casual tone in which Burke presents the following statement: “Four months to the day he first encountered the boy at Walmart, the last of Phil Pendleton’s teeth fell out.”Rather than minimize the horror, the blandly stated fact really intensified the fear, anguish and horror that I felt. Kealan Patrick Burke is able to masterfully manipulate the reader’s emotions with such apparent ease. This is a quality I feel that make his books so effective, and so memorable. There is no question that I will be eagerly reading everything that Burke puts into print!

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Kealan Patrick Burke Always Delivers! By Daniel V. Reilly I've been beating the drum for Kealan Patrick Burke ever since Necessary Evil Press published his novella, THE TURTLE BOY over a decade ago. The man has style and talent out the wazoo, and his prose can cut you right down to your soul. He's tagged as a Horror author, but he's one of those rare talents that you just hate to see pigeonholed, since he's so damned good at anything he puts to paper. There are a lot of authors that I enjoy, but few that can actually affect me emotionally on a consistent basis...Kealan has written stuff that has creeped me out, stuff that has mad me think, and stuff that has devastated me. When people ask me "Who's your favorite author?", they usually get a list, but Kealan's name is, invariably, close to the top of that list. He's someone that you need to discover, if you haven't already. A new Kealan Patrick Burke story is always cause to celebrate, and his latest, SOUR CANDY, is especially impressive. It landed in my inbox a few days ago, an I devoured it like a nasty ol' bag of Sour Patch Kids. Phil Pendleton, while making a chocolate run for his girlfriend, comes across a screaming child and his haggard mother in the candy aisle. The pair attract the attention of Phil and his fellow shoppers with their bizarre behavior, and while the mother is being asked to leave the store by the manager, the child offers Phil one of the sour candies that started his screaming fit in the first place. Phil accepts it, hoping to avoid a scene, and goes on his way. While driving home, Phil is rear-ended by the woman from the store, wrecking both of their cars. She emerges from her car, mutters to Phil "Yours now.", and promptly walks into traffic to commits suicide by taxi. Phil informs the bystanders that she had a child with her in the store, and they check the car...but find nothing. Won't Phil be surprised when he finds that screaming child from the store, Adam, waiting for him when he gets home....? SOUR CANDY is a stellar addition to the underrepresented "Evil child" sub-genre, and Adam is one of the nastiest, most original Evil Children I've ever come across. Burke packs a lot into this novella, and, while I enjoy a vague threat as much as the next guy, we actually get to find out just who Adam is, and what he wants with Phil. Chilling stuff, made even more effective by how finely-drawn a character Phil is. Burke puts us in Phil's head as he goes through the same questions and doubts that any of us would have in a situation like this, and he smartly shoots down any of the Horror-movie-logic loopholes that a jaded fan like me could think of. This is beautifully-written, exquisitely creepy stuff.....Highly recommended.

By all of us networking together, internet commerce can be a win-win for everybody, because producers can learn what they need to do; consumers can purchase what they are seeing; and reviewers can improve their analysis and can then be a part of the solution. This book review is a little more difficult for me than the average novel. First, it has been translated into English, which makes it a bit of a task to determine what aspect(s) are due to translation; what idiosyncrasies are due to a writing style common in the country of origin; and what habits are unique to the writer. Still, the popularity of this work leads one to believe this book deserves, no, demands a review that goes into some analysis. And, book analysis is not something I am especially good at. I simply love good stories. What I like about this story: The major plot is intriguing and the story keeps improving along the journey. The writer does a terrific job of showing us, instead of telling us, what is evident along the way. Her description of one horrific scene was excellent. Done without unnecessary gore, but sufficiently to re-awaken in me a scene I witnessed shortly after two workers fell some 55 meters to their death on a construction project my employer had in Egypt. Because that scene was horrific, I am grateful the author didn’t go delve further into the scene than she did.Another aspect, central to this story, is dealt with rather well. That is the supernatural aspect, that I’ll not describe for I loathe spoilers. I am especially appreciative in this aspect, for, although I do definitely believe in the supernatural and have some experience in the sort she details, I nearly always reject stories in which ESP is key to solving the story. I reject such a premise in fiction simply because using it as a key permits the writer to solve crimes too easily. Anyway, the writer of The Guardians of History does not commit that crime and I am pleased.Having praised her writing, I will voice my objections near the end of this review. Is this a book that I can read without having to read others first? This is the first in a series. Is this a stand alone or is there an unresolved ending? Kind of a mix of both. One could read this novel and stop there and, I believe, feel contented. Yet, there is clearly more to the story than is revealed at the end.Are there a lot of typos/misspellings, grammatical errors or other editing failures? I did not notice any, other than what may have been a result of the translation. At any rate, this is a professional writer and the book has had professional editing. Is it a quick, easy read and is the writer enthusiastic in his/her approach? Fir 379 pages, this is an incredibly fast read. I also think it might be more entertaining to listen to the audio version. I intend to make it one of my two selections next month. After I’ve had sufficient time to forget much of the specifics, I will listen to it while commuting. What sort of language does this writer use to amplify the points made? Definitely this is written in adult English. People offended by frequent use of the f-bomb will want to read something else. Of course, there are few writers of crime fiction who shy away from harsh language. My one misgiving with this book was the point of view. It seemed to change so frequently that I would tend to get confused. Especially unnerving was the habit to introduce the character’s inner thoughts within or between contradictory statements. It did tend to help clarify that they were the thoughts by having those bits in italics, but, for me, it was unwelcome. View the short excerpt below, but note and have used caps instead of italics because I haven’t discovered how to italicize within the Amazon review.EXCERPT:Confusion displayed by this excerpt (multiple points of view)“Bruce asked him to come with me,” said Tomas McKey. “We’ve both known Jethro for years, and we thought that his support might facilitate negotiations.”NEGOTIATIONS? I SHOULD HAVE KNOWN THERE WAS SOMETHING SUSPICIOUS GOING ON.“There will be no negotiation, Tomas,” Katherine said, with a piercing gaze.“Please, Katherine, we’ve been discussing this for six months.”“Yes, and I’ll tell you the same thing now that I did then. My idea is not for sale. I agreed to partner with you to produce the cartoon, but I have no intention of giving up the creative rights.”“Katherine, Xavier Inc. is prepared to invest a lot of money in this project.” “You keep saying that. And I will keep telling you until the day I die, Blood Trax is mine.”“Bull[expletive deleted]. That’s not what I agreed to.”“What? I have made myself clear from the start.” Katherine felt anger burn inside her.“You work in publishing. You’re not cut out for the television business. No one creates an empire overnight. You’re getting too cocky, Katherine,” Tomas said, raising his voice.Katherine glared, suppressing the urge to throw him out of the room.“If you turned Blood Trax over to us, we could realize incredible growth. Maybe you’re just afraid to lose the spotlight.”WHO DOES THIS POTBELLIED JERK THINK HE’S DEALING WITH? “Tomas, I gave you the chance to make the pilot episode of the cartoon. I accepted your overpriced fees, because I was well aware of your friendship with the shareholders. But after today, I’m done dealing with you. You’ve crossed the line.” Katherine…Cametti, Elisabetta (2015-11-17). The Guardians of History (K Series Book 1) (Kindle Locations 187-201). . Kindle Edition. If it weren’t for my confusion and for the inner thoughts display method, I would have regretted only that I could not award six stars. But, the POV was confusing enough for the two above cited reasons, I have rated this novel Four Stars. Still, of course, I look forward to the sequels with anticipation for a great ride.Mind you, it is possible I sound unhappy with the book. I am not, I am definitely glad that I purchased The Guardians of History. I merely want to ensure my review helps potential readers decide if this tale of international intrigue is right for them.
