5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. An Enjoyable Fantasy Tale By DMReader This is a solid fantasy book about varied, powerful beings of different races engaged in an epic war. The magic system is handled well and the story moves along quickly, with a few twists. There are some good characters that are fleshed out fairly well (including familiars) and as a reader I was interested in what would happen to them. All in all an enjoyable read.

In some ways you can tell that Chris O'Mara is a fairly new author, but I always appreciate a kind of raw quality to a book. It's tales like that where the author hasn't quite learned to pull his/her punches yet, and the overall effect is something closer to truth."Healer's Ruin" is not your typical sword and sorcery tale with a burly warrior that is basically unstoppable in battle. This book follows a healer or "slinger" named Chalos. Chalos is a powerful healer, but he doesn't possess a lot of offensive magic, so you get a strong sense of vulnerability with him. He is very dependent on the soldiers that surround him, but they are equally dependent on him. It's an interesting dynamic, and sometimes Chalos is forced to do things that he doesn't wish to do.A novel like this allows you to contemplate deeper issues than the typical "good guy slaughters bad guy" fare. For example, if Chalos is dependent on a group and that group performs some immoral acts, what will the consequences be on Chalos's psyche? I liked being taken to those philosophical drop off points, and I also appreciated how O'Mara let these moments bloom on their own without being forced. There are a few superior scenes in this book, one where Chalos is required to heal some prisoners so that they can get more information beaten out of them stands out.The world building in this book is very complex, which is both good and bad. I appreciated how well formed it was once I started to grasp the rules, but the first few chapters required a bit more understanding than I had initially. There are getting to be so many fantasy worlds that I'm almost getting to a point of fantasy fatigue. I think a good tactic might be to start things off on a really human level, engage the readers, and then introduce the story elements a little more slowly (you don't know anything about "The Force" in Star Wars until you're well into the movie). However, books like Dune dump you in the deep end and expect you to swim...so maybe my tastes are atypical.In tone, this book reminded me of Master of the Five Magics (Del Rey Fantasy) which is also about a magic user. It's a little dark and the troop seems doomed from pretty early on. I also kind of was reminded of Aguirre: The Wrath of God (although I think my own cobwebby, foggy thinking brought that to the table more than the book did)...I'd be interested to hear if the author has ever seen that. I think it was just the ominous weight that hangs over the proceedings...its not called "Healer's Happy Time" now is it?All in all, this book is completely worth your time. If it's still at .99 it's a bargain. Grab it, read it, and let your friends know.

It is unique in how the protagonist is actually pitted against the hero, and how his brave choices bring an end to a war and perhaps an evil dominion that that was otherwise unwinnable and unavoidable. The Healer grows during the story and becomes much more than the unwilling pawn that he begins the tale as. The adventure unfolds while dragging the protagonist further and further into the center of the whirlwind of war, betrayal, intrigue, amazing creatures and magic that he wanted so desperately to avoid, and lands him on the only path that could possibly produce a good outcome. Masterfully written.

The main characters, Charlotte and Paige, travel west to meet Paige's husband to be and his family. The story totally drew me in and before I knew it, I saw "The End". I'm hoping for future installments!! The one thing I didn't like was the fact that there are multiple grammatical and punctuation errors, this is why I gave just 4 stars.I received a copy of this book in exchange for my true and honest review.

Some readers might take exception to Charlotte's "flight" response but anyone who truly knows that kind of terror would understand the mental syce there. It was short & sweet but for me, a little too trusting for the female characters blindly trusting the "need for secrecy" without knowing more. I do realize that it may just be me but I need to know more before I trust so a little bit more time developing the characters & plot would have enhanced this for me. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Masterpiece! By Carmen This book was so much better than the last one. The story had a nice flow the plot had a little suspense and romance. Their were even funny side character's. So much better than a five star read.

By KristyA 4.5 stars I love this series, and I think it's getting better with each book.This is a series of novellas, therefore the books are short. Given the length of the books, the character development is great, but there's only so much that can be fitted into a novella.If you don't enjoy messed up, in some instances downright crazy (*cough* Alex) characters, or novellas, then these books probably won't be for you.I loved Gannon, and by the end of Shatter I began to like Alex too. At first I struggled to understand why Gannon would want to be with someone who had acted with his ex (Ryker) just like Gannon's ex (Seb), but it became apparent that the motivation/reasons for Alex's previous behaviour were not relevant to his relationship with Gannon. Doesn't excuse it, but did explain it somewhat.I can't wait for Andrei's story next. I loved him in this story and I'm really excited to get to know him better in Crush.

Each time I read the next one it becomes my favorite and I adore the main characters and all the supporting characters -- you just have to start at the first of this series because the stories all intertwine (this author is a genius). Eagerly awaiting the next story!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Not believable By luv2read First of all, someone needs to actually read the book for typographical errors. Random words in sentences, wrong pronouns, etc.The main female character is a doormat for her friends. Who gets up at 2am and picks up friends from a night club? They can call Uber or a taxi! Then she has to go inside to find them? And this is a regular occurrence? Then, she claims that she has always wanted to work for the publishing company she is interviewing at, yet in this day and age she doesn't research who founded and is running the company? Especially since he is so young and up and coming in the publishing industry? She didn't even know his name? It's just not believable. I won't even get into the believability of her being a virgin and then letting a stranger go as far as he did the first time they met -- even if she was attracted to him.

It's written from both perspectives of the main characters but after reading Josh's side of (I did this, that, and the other to her) and I felt, Candice tells the exact same thing (he did this, that, and the other to me) and I felt.....I felt like I was just re-reading the same chapter duplicated. Redundant. I felt it didn't flow like most story lines. I returned all of them, just glad I was reading free through kindle unlimited and didn't purchase them all or I would be very unhappy.
