It's London in 1876, and the whole city is abuzz with the enigmatic disappearance of a famous foreign pianist. Lenox has an eye on the matter – as a partner in a now-thriving detective agency, he's a natural choice to investigate. Just when he's tempted to turn his focus to it entirely, however, his grieving brother asks him to come down to Sussex, and Lenox leaves the metropolis behind for the quieter country life of his boyhood. Or so he thinks. In fact, something strange is afoot in Markethouse: small thefts, books, blankets, animals, and more alarmingly a break-in at the house of a local insurance agent. As he and his brother to investigate this small accumulation of mysteries, Lenox realizes that something very strange and serious indeed may be happening, more than just local mischief. Soon, he's racing to solve two cases at once, one in London and one in the country, before either turns deadly. Blending Charles Finch's trademark wit, elegance, and depth of research, this new mystery, equal parts Jane Austen and Charles Dickens, may be the finest in the series.

Review
"A sterling addition to this well-polished series.... Odd, mysterious thefts [provide] a chance for Finch to dazzle us with his amusing studies of country folk and his offbeat approach to historic particulars." ―The New York Times Book Review
"Finch is a clever plotter and assiduous researcher. Like Anthony Trollope, he is an insider’s outsider. If you are a mystery addict seeking an escape hatch from the 21st century, check out this series by an elegant writer at the top of his form." ―Seattle Times
“Superb . . . Boasting one of Finch's tightest and trickiest plots, this installment further establishes Lenox as a worthy heir to the aristocratic mantle of Lord Peter Wimsey.” ―Publishers Weekly (starred) on A Death in the Small Hours
“The sixth in Finch's steadily improving series develops the congenial continuing characters further while providing quite a decent mystery.” ―Kirkus Reviews on A Death in the Small Hours
“Charles Lenox [is] the gentleman sleuth in this beguiling series…. Finch's descriptions of life at sea are so fascinating it's a shame Lenox must bring this case to an end.” ―Marilyn Stasio, New York Times Book Review
“The murder mystery that Finch weaves keeps readers guessing as Lenox must figure out how--and why--the killings are accomplished. . . . an intriguing read on several levels.” ―Mary Foster, The Associated Press
“Much of the fun comes from watching Finch channel Patrick O'Brian (Master and Commander) as his landlubber hero finds his sea legs. You'll feel the spray in your face and worry, like the lovely Lady Jane back in England, that Lenox makes it safely home for book six--and the arrival of a new member of the family.” ―McClurg, USA Today

Lenox solves a Sussex murder and a London disappearance By Patto By now Charles Lenox is past forty-five and has quit Parliament to run a detective agency, By choice, not necessity, he's come down in the world, descending socially from MP to "trade." But he's no less a gentleman sleuth, with an elegant house in London and aristocratic connections. In this book Lenox takes time off to visit his elder brother Edmund at the family estate. Newly widowed, Sir Edmund needs company. The local village, normally placid, turns out to be oddly troubled. There have been peculiar thefts, and a break-in. Then the mayor, a singularly dull man, is viciously stabbed.Meanwhile back in London a famous German pianist has disappeared. Charles wants nothing better than to investigate this celebrity case, but cheering up his brother is more important. And then there's the lure of a mystery in his native village.Charles Finch writes engagingly of nineteenth-century village life and the quirks of village characters. His low-key wit feels very Victorian. He captures the atmosphere of Victorian London with equal flair -- the chaotic carriage traffic, the aggressive foot traffic, the so-called slap-bang eateries selling clerks cheap food, the rank smell of the river and waste matter and horses...What I like most about the Charles Lenox mysteries is that, while they are very well researched, the historical mood setting is never heavy handed. An occasional tidbit from history, a casual mention of traditional furnishings, hats or puddings, is enough to settle the reader comfortably in the nineteenth century. The crimes in this novel are puzzling, the pace is leisurely as befits the era, and Lenox's insights and reasoning are clever. The resolution of the cases is a bit surprising. I get the greatest pleasure from these mysteries. Home by Nightfall is one of the best.
8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. the best Charles Lenox novel yet? By N. Ferguson R. I've read about half of this series, and have tended to be a fan but not a super-fan. This story seems to be the strongest yet, both in terms of plotting and the continuing development of characters and relationships we really care about. For those new to the series, Charles Lenox is a former member of Parliament who now spends his time conducting private investigations within an agency run by a group of friends and colleagues. Charles is married to Lady Jane, and is a barely respectable member of the aristocracy due to his work.Lenox is pulled in two directions at the beginning of the novel. He needs to support his brother Edmund at the family estate in Sussex after the illness and unexpected death of Edmund's wife Molly. He is also intrigued by the disappearance of a reknowned German pianist in London. When Charles heads home he becomes embroiled in the investigation of a number of odd occurrences, and Edmund is drawn in to the fun as well. Jane keeps Charles informed of developments in the Muller puzzle, and both mysteries present enjoyable tangles for the reader and our friends to sort out.I really enjoy the 1870s details in this series and the sense of place the author creates. Most importantly, I appreciate the likable characters in this series and the evolution of their relationships as the series continues. Fans of Charles Lenox and Lady Jane will appreciate Home By Nightfall.

Perhaps because Lenox is back in his boyhood territory and I could feel the connection to the place and inhabitants. Or, it could be because his brother's feelings of grief and his empathy for them, were better drawn than the emotions in some of the other books. For whatever reason, I found this book more enjoyable. The stock characters are there as well as some new ones, and well done. I was glad that Finch did not make the two stories come magically together at the end, like so many authors do, but kept the separate threads flowing nicely. I didn't give this five stars because I still find that the relationship between Lenox and his wife is a bit blah. However, it is fun to see how enchanted he is with his daughter. I do have one bone to pick, but it is personal. In the 1800's, horses under two years old were not normally started under saddle, and they certainly weren't ridden hard across country or jumped. Even today, horseman have better sense than jumping a two year old colt. But, that is personal and shouldn't stop any one from reading and enjoying this book.
